Remote computer managment

Question

Hello,     This is my first post so I hope it's in the right forum. I have a small home network (2 computers). One is a new Dell dimension 9100 running windows xp media center 2005. The other is an older machine running windows 98se. I  use a star topology network. I have run the network setup wizard on both machines. I have no trouble sharing files and both computers show up in network places. I can ping between the computers also. My problem is that I want to remotely administer the 98 machine from the xp machine. I open administrative tools, computer managment , actions-connect to another computer, but the 98 machine doesn't show up. If I search my work group the xp machine is there but not the 98 machine. If I type in the name of the 98 machine, I get an error message that the computer name is invalid, which of course it isn't. I have set up the 98 machine to enable remote administration, but to no avail. I am fairly computer savy and have checked all my configurations and every thing seems to be as it should.  I can type net view from the command prompt and both machines are there. Is this a compatability problem? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Download the Remote Desktop program from Microsoft and install it on the 98 machine, if it will install at all.  The XP machine will then be able to see the 98 machine.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry it took so long to respond but I just got back from a business trip and just now had a chance to look at the board. I will try your suggestion and reply back with the results.

Well, installing remote desktop on the 98 machine did not solve the problem. It installed fine. I can now remotely administer the xp machine from the 98 machine, but I want to be able to administer the 98 mach. from the xp. Any other suggestions? Thanks

renegadeak, Use Ultravnc instead.  It does not care about the OS at all.

Thanks for the tip. The ultravnc program works great. Kind of pathetic that microsoft does't support remote management between the two operation systems. You would think that if they have software to let win98 manage xp that they would also have something to work the other way around. Oh, well. Thanks again for you help.
