Remote Desktop

I need help connecting to my home computer with Remote Desktop.  I was able to connect while in my home network.  I have a fixed IP of 192.168.*.***  and I know my sevice provider assigned IP address.  I used the fixed IP to connect while at home in my network but not sure if I should use the ISP IP or not when outside my net work.  I have Comcast and I am using McCaffe suite through Comcast.  I have a Dlink wireless N router and I opened the 3389 port for the home computer I want to use as the host.  What else am I missing?  I am trying to connect from an E1505 running Vista Home Premium and my host is running XP Media Center on a wired LAN through my Dlink wireless router.  Like I said I have already been successful at home but cant connect away.

You need to get your router to forward port 3389 to the internal IP address of your home pc then remote desktop should work.  If not you need to check the firwall settings on the pc and router.

I got it to work by shutting down my virus software's firewall but My next question is how do you open up port 3389 in McAfee firewall?  I would like to activate it to get rid of the errors.  I do have windows firewall running but it's designed to open 3389.  Also I think I just realized that you cant drag or copy files or folders to your client desktop.  Apparently you can only copy text to a shared clipboard.  And thanks Martyn

I was able to open port 3389 in the firewall settings under system settings.  Remote Desktop is an option.  Now I have all of my security running.

If you dig into the options in remote desktop instead of just connecting there's an option to share hard drives, this will allow you to move files inside your remote session, while your at it if you reduce the colour depth and disable unnecessary features such as desktop theme's and backgrounds you'll improve connection speed.

In RDC v.6 you need to select options and go to the 'Local Resources' tab, select more at the bottom and the drives you need to access.

I use 16bit colour mode with themes disabled as I'm also usually connecting to a server.

Awesome, Thanks.  Also I was told you could access your computer through a browser if you type the IP followed by \c$  is this correct?  It seems you would have to open another port for this to make it past your firewall.
