Well, it is not 100% that the hardware is fault but is seems so. Maybe log in to Windows via Safe mode with Networking? (F8 key before booting) and try then? Dumb viruses won't load then... probably.
Anyway, to buy a network card... emm, kinda waste of money (thats the little jew in me). But if you bought a wireless USB network adapter?
Or if the router doesn't have wireless - buy a wi-fi capable router :-)
Those can be used elsewhere too.

The laptop has a PCMCIA Card slot on the side.  You can buy a PCMCIA Ethernet adapter (looks like a wireless adapter) that will make a wired connection back to the router.

You might also want to download a program named WINSOCKFIX for XP (just Google).  this will reset the TCP stack in XP and is free.  Better to try free first than spend $$.

Why would you buy an expensive PCMCIA card that you will have to throw out after 6 month?
What is wrong with your way of (lack of?) thinking?

Can you please include the system model? There are some troubleshooting steps we can do that will help determine if it is a hardware problem or a software problem. You can use the following Troubleshooting Guide, just put in the information and it should walk you through a few things to try. We'll be glad to help too.

The PCMCIA card was one of the options I was considering because, honestly, we will have to go with what we can find and set up in the next 12 hours before I leave. It's just not like shopping in the US, alas. The PCMCIA card may be cheaper than & less complicated than buying a wireless router and setting up the security.

But I will try to download the WINSOCK program and run it first, if the computer can stay connected that long. Thanks for the idea.

It is a Dell Inspiron 1100. I wish I could work through that Dell troubleshooting page but remember, we can't stay connected. And for some reason the pages generate all sorts of errors on this iBook and go nowhere, a problem that's too low on my list of priorities to resolve now. So we would love to know what those pages suggest, but can't get at them.

Had a somewhat amusing response to a form I filled out on the Taiwan Dell support pages asking where I could bring the computer for billable service. It said:

"According to confirm with our technician, there is no inventory in tw for the part, because TW DELL havn't marketing the Inspron 1100,it means that the we can't do even billable service for the NB.

However, from the technical and location of part side, we advice if it is convinient for you, you could take the NB to HONGKONG or Malaysia for the replacement for the part."

@No, it's not exactly convenient to take it to ANOTHER COUNTRY to find the part.... @@

Winsock is a very small program and could be transferred over via a flash drive and needs no connectivity to run.

I know all about living overseas and not being able to go out at anytime  of day to go and get something as trivila as a computer part, not to mention gasoline, food, etc, etc etc etc
