Replacing NIC options
My daughter is in Taipei for the year and after 6 months of successfully working, her Dell Inspiron has quit staying connected to her DSL. Tech help in English here isn't easily found, so the solution will have to be do-it-yourself.
We think possibly the NIC has gone funky. It will stay connected for awhile, then get an error 678 and a message that the network cable is unplugged--but of course, it's not. We've tried different cords, tried adjusting settings provided by Hinet, tried resetting the router, tried various ports in the router but nothing keeps it connected for long.
The real clue is that my Mac iBook stays connected just fine.
We're not sure we are up to finding the right NIC here, opening the case and replacing it. Is this difficult? She really needs her computer and worries that we will inflict more serious damage.
BUT 2 other ideas...maybe. If we buy an external NIC card and then disable the Broadcom, does that circumvent the problem? Or is there an interdependence?
What about a wireless card and router? She'd like to be wireless anyway. Will that solve the problem or is the original NIC also needed?
Thanks for any help. I'd like to leave here in 2 days knowing that she will again have a functioning lifeline to the world!

Anyway, to buy a network card... emm, kinda waste of money (thats the little jew in me). But if you bought a wireless USB network adapter?
Or if the router doesn't have wireless - buy a wi-fi capable router :-)
Those can be used elsewhere too.

What is wrong with your way of (lack of?) thinking?

The PCMCIA card was one of the options I was considering because, honestly, we will have to go with what we can find and set up in the next 12 hours before I leave. It's just not like shopping in the US, alas. The PCMCIA card may be cheaper than & less complicated than buying a wireless router and setting up the security.
But I will try to download the WINSOCK program and run it first, if the computer can stay connected that long. Thanks for the idea.

It is a Dell Inspiron 1100. I wish I could work through that Dell troubleshooting page but remember, we can't stay connected. And for some reason the pages generate all sorts of errors on this iBook and go nowhere, a problem that's too low on my list of priorities to resolve now. So we would love to know what those pages suggest, but can't get at them.
Had a somewhat amusing response to a form I filled out on the Taiwan Dell support pages asking where I could bring the computer for billable service. It said:
"According to confirm with our technician, there is no inventory in tw for the part, because TW DELL havn't marketing the Inspron 1100,it means that the we can't do even billable service for the NB.
However, from the technical and location of part side, we advice if it is convinient for you, you could take the NB to HONGKONG or Malaysia for the replacement for the part."
@No, it's not exactly convenient to take it to ANOTHER COUNTRY to find the part.... @@
