router buzzing, who is it talking to?

When I connect my computer to the net my router goes wild with activity. I have tools to check for viruses and trojans but nothing comes up. can anyone tell me how to find out who my computer is talking to and what info is being exchanged? Thanks.
P.S. there are lots of processes running per task manager but it reports no programs.

Windows Updates, AV Updates, Spyware Updates, could be one of a dozen things going on if you always disconnect before the process gets finished,
