Router to Internet Connection (Dumb Blond Question)

Sometimes I lose my router to my internet connection (DSL).  My DSL provider (ATT Yahoo) says when this happens I need to temporary hard wire (Cat 5) and connect through the network adaptor (my case it is the Intel Pro/100 VE Network Connection).  After I get a connection via the Cat5 Cable, I then just disconnect and re-hook-up as wireless and it works.  They say I need to hardwire since the router has lost the user id and password to their site.  They say it loses this information due to some type of interfearence such as the router too close to modem, power supply too close, etc.  This is a pain in the...

My question is:

Is this the correct cause (interference)?

Is there a better fix than unhooking and rehooking up like firmware updates?

Last resort (i don't want to do this but) Should I move an old computer over to the router so that I always have a hard wire connection?

P.S. My router is speed stream 5360 and wireless router is Belkin F5D7230-4 (wireless G).  In my set up the router is not hard wired to a computer

In short no thats not why you loose the connection. Wireless will at times temporarily disconnect and the time it takes you to hardwire and try again is simply giving it enough time to reconnect on its own.  A quicker fix if you have vista would be to right click down where the little computer icon is near the time that has the little planet earth when the internet is available and choose diagnose and repair this will generally cause it to reconnect faster. There are somethings you can do to help your wireless perform better such as make sure your wireless router is high up in the house as radio waves travel easier down than up. Updating your wireless card driver may also help but you will probably no matter what ocasionally have the temporary disconnect.

Thanks  I have XP Home and I have tried to right click the network connection and "repair" when I have had this problem.  That has never worked.  Sometime unplugging cords (power, phone line, CAT5 Modum to router) i can get it to work but never with the "repair" feature.  I live in a ranch so everything is level.

Thanks again.

I have ATT DSL as well.   Sometimes it will go for a month without dropping the connection, other times it will have dropped it when I get home from work.  DSL uses PPPOE which requires a username and password for the connection and the connection may be dropped if there is no activity.  Normally the router will have you enter your username and password when you select PPPOE, and then will keep the connection open.  In my experience, when the connection drops I can either login to the router set up menu, choose status, and tell it to connect, or if I just unplug the router for a couple of seconds it will log back in when it restarts.
