Share Files on Home Network (ad-hoc???)

Ad-hoc means that you are trying to connect one computer to another computer without an intervening network (that is without a router or access point between).  Is that what you are trying to do?  Or, since you mention a network, are you just trying to enable file and printer sharing across the network (in which case it doesn't matter if the computers are connecting by wired or wireless because they are all on the same network).  If this is the case, I hope you have not put the wireless cards in ad-hoc mode.  Please explain.

First, take the wireless cards out of ad-hoc mode.  There are hundreds of tutorials on file and printer sharing on web.  Have you searched?   Basically, you need to make sure File and Printer sharing is enabled on each network card.  To do this (assuming you are running Windows XP) open Network Properties, right click the network connection over which you want to share files and select Properties.   Make sure there is a check mark in the box next to File and Printer Sharing.  Next open Windows Explorer or My Computer, navigate to the drive or folder that contains files you want to share, then right click and select Sharing.  The options available will depend on whether you have XP Home or XP Pro.  In short, just tell it you want to make the drive or folder available to anyone on the network.  Finally, make sure any software firewalls you are running are configured to allow local network access. 

 

The drives or folders should then show up under My Network Places and you can access them just like you would through Windows Explorer or My Computer. 

 

Note that you will not be able to share the Windows folder or anything under the Documents and Settings folder except the All Users/Documents folder which is the same as the Shared Documents folder.
