Sharing Files, connecting to computers
I currently have 2 computers on a wired network (ethernet). One of them is a Windows 2000 computer and the other is a Windows XP computer. Whenever I want to access a file on the other computer, I click on the shortcut icon I made on my desktop which brings me to the other computer's shared files. The only problem is, when I'm on the XP computer and try to access the Win2K computer, it asks me for the username and password. But it doesn't ask me this when I'm connecting from the Win2K to XP computer (although for some reason it's a little slower than the XP to 2000 connection, not sure why). Can anyone explain why it asks me for the username and password on the XP to Win2K connection? And, if possible, why the Win2K to XP connection seems a little sluggish, althought I can deal with the decrease in speed. Thanks!

Security in Windows 2K is different than security in Windows XP. Windows XP uses "Simple File Sharing" which does not require passwords. This is Microsoft's effort to make Windows XP easier for the home user. If you are running Windows XP Pro, you can disable Simple File Sharing and make Windows XP work in a way similar to Windows 2K. As to why 2K to XP seems sluggish, I cannot answer without knowing all of the details of the hardware of the computers involved as well as the network equipment over which file sharing takes place.

Have you tried enabling the Guest account on the Windows 2K machine? (Sorry, I no longer have any Window 2K machines on which to test things myself).
