Slow wireless with IntelProSet

Question

Hi,

I'm finding that my IntelProset 3945ABG wireless card is operating at approximately half speed.

My broadband connection is 8Mb. I verify this because if I connect my Inspirion 640m with a direct ethernet cable, I get a speed of around 6600Kb/s. If I use my other laptop, running Windows 2000, via a Belkin wireless card, I also get that speed. BUT with my Dell, I only get 3300. So clearly it is a problem with the wireless card. I am running Windows XP, I've upgraded to the latest Intel drivers. Any ideas? The Proset utility says I have excellent signal quality and I'm connected at 54Mbps.

If by chance you are a Telewest Cable customer and using PCGuard uninstall PCGuard. See if it makes a difference. If you are not a TW customer then ignore the above!

Thanks, but I'm not on Telewest. I do have Windows Firewall and McAfee Firewall switched on though.

Hmmm....That sure is an odd one. Drivers are all the way updated. Windows is up to date, and your mcafee is up to date. Have you tried disabling mcafee to see? A different internet browser? also a different speed tester?   You probally know this, but bandwidth is measured in bits which is 1/8 the size of a byte. So you would be getting 6600Kbps or your real rate of 1MBps, 8000Kbps. So if you are receiving 1400Kbps less than what you should be getting, isnt that a problem itself, maybe its related?  What happens if the notebook is the only computer on the network, with a router, the computers share bandwidth and some might be faster than others. Thats wierd for its speed to be less, but I think this is internet connection related or that you are sharing the bandwidth.    Reason why: Your transfer speed via wireless is 54Mbps, where as your 'internet speed' is supposed to be at 8Mbps. So seeing as you are transfering faster, it could be an issue with your isp, modem, cords, or router.  Updating your router's firmware might help this, warning tho, it could freeze your router, so call the manufacturer for help just to make sure. Message Edited by AvidChronos on 10-01-2006 05:15 PM

Wow - that fixed it - thanks! So I downloaded DrTCP, set my TCP window size to 65536, restarted, and now my speed test says 6888K.

Wow,  thats cool, Im going to have to check that out and give it a try sometime. thanks for showing me too.   Glad you got it working, ive never heard of that being the reason, only the obvious that I listed. So Ill keep that in mind thanks.
