Strange Wireless Problem, Please Help

Ah, I see.

Yes, others can connect wirelessly through this router.

I downloaded this torrent program to download some files, thats about the only thing. My wireless internet worked after running that program however. I tried to remove the torrent software but all it is, is one single .exe file.

I haven't changed any of the tcp/ip properties.

Do you think this could have something to do with ports?

Your DNS server in your ipconfig report shows the routers address instead of the internet providers dns servers.  On the pc's or laptops that do work what are the listed in the DNS servers on the ipconfig. Make sure your TCP/IP configuration is set to Obtain DNS server address automatically.  Post the DNS server listing from the functioning laptops.

Unbelievably I have the same exact issue again.

I tried resetting my modem 5 times, leaving it off for over an hour even. That didn't work.

I wonder if it was just a coincidence that it worked last time.

What do you guys think?

Intermittent problems like this are the most difficult to solve.   If you do a reset again and connect a computer to the modem directly, can you get it to work?  If so, write down the IP address you are getting so you can compare this with later tests.  If you then reset it again and connect the router, see if you can log on to the routers configuration utility and see if it is getting an IP address from the modem (look at the Router Status page).  If it is working, then you should get an IP address similar to the one you got while directly connected to the modem.  When the connection is not working and with the router connected to the modem, shut off the router, the turn it on again, log into the router's configuration page again and check the Status Page.  Does it give a similar IP address?   

I'm still confused by this whole thing because you claim that when it is not working on your computer, other computers can connect.  Is this still true?

Ok try this. Open Command prompt.  Type "nslookup www.microsoft.com"  It seems that you are resolving dns based on the email access (assuming you are using names and not IP addresses.)  Other things to check are proxy settings on IE or firefox.  The nslookup will tell if you are resolving dns and what server is being used to resolve dns.  I assume you are using a 834 netgear router with the dns server built in, but maybe you can clarify that.  What is the router?  Have you updated the firmware on the router? If the router is not always resolving dns for you, but the computers dnscache has the name and ip address, some will appear to work.  I believe the nslookup will query the server directly, but not positive.

Try some other web addresses to see if there are others.  Try some that you have never used.

Ok good.  The dns server is not working.  Check the settings on the router to make sure it is set to get the domain name server address automatically.  It is on bottom of the basic settings page.  see link.  Set it to "Get automatically from ISP" if it isn't. Who is your isp?

Thanks again for the help, unfortunately my router dns settings were already set to "automatic"

Below is a picture of my settings.  Also, I took my laptop to a friends house and the wireless Internet worked perfectly so I'm guessing it must be a problem with how my laptop interacts with the router (because other computers work flawlessly with my router).

If you check the router status page does it show the dns servers from your isp.  If it does then you may be right. If not then your router isn't getting the dns servers from the isp and therefore cannot pass them to your laptop.  Usually a laptop and router incompatibilty wouldn't show up as not getting the dns servers, but I'm sure stranger things have happened.  It would be more common to have a wireless connectivity problem. 

I dont get it. My computer has a mind of its own. This morning I wake up to find that my wireless Internet works with IE and Firefox...

this is very strange.

Any idea why this would randomly happen?
