STUDIO 1737 wifi switch not working

Hi

I can't enable the radio to create a wifi connection because the wifi switch on the side of the laptop isn't working.

I have uninstalled and re-installed the latest drivers for the WLAN card, and I have uninstalled and re-installed the latest drivers for DELL Wireless Utility.

All of the Wireless options are enabled in the BIOS

FN+F2 does not work

Selecting "Enable Radio" from the Dell Wireless Utility does not work. I receive a message saying that the radio is still disabled and that I need to switch it on using the switch on the side of the laptop. The switch is in the correct position but it doesn't work.

The problem has existed since a LAN cable was used to connect to the Internet. The cable is no longer connected. The "Disable Upon Wired Connect" feature is not enabled.

The device and drivers are showing correctly in Device Manager.

Any suggestions and help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

 ococyar,

You have a Dell Studio 1737

What operating system is installed? 32-bit or 64-bit?

What network adapters do you have installed? If you run Finding System Information, at the bottoms you can copy and paste the network adapters that are listed. If you post the whole information, please remove the Product ID Number.

It's a 32 bit system.

Is this the information you mean?....

Name [00000012] Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card
Adapter Type Ethernet 802.3
Product Type Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card

Thanks a lot!

 ococyar,

Yes, my Studio 1737 Vista Home Premium 64-bit has a 5100 AGN network adapter.

Click start, in search type Quickset and click on it. You should see this. It may show that wireless is off. Click on turn on wireless.

It should then look like this.

Also check in the device manager for yellow exclaimination marks or red x's

While in the device manager, click on network, 1397 WLAN Adapter, advanced. Look at the Antenna Diversity(if it's there) and try changing it from Auto to Aux.

What happens?

Hi

I downloaded and installed Quickset but I can't launch it. I don't know why. Typing Quickset in search doesn't work. There are no launch icons anywhere. It's not in control panel. The only place I can see it is in the list of programs to uninstall.

The WLAN card is showing okay in device manager.

I changed the Antenna Diversity to Aux but nothing happened.

I'm still trying to figure out Quickset, but do you have have any other suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

 ococyar,

Did you recently reinstall the operating system?

How to by-pass the Dell Download Manager

Using Internet Explorer download Dell QuickSet. Install Dell QuickSet.

Hi

Some progress - I downloaded quickset again via internet explorer and was able to launch it but the "Turn Wireless On" button is greyed out so it can't be pressed.

I haven't reinstalled the OS recently.

I wonder what's up with it??

 ococyar,

On the keyboard, is the WIFI lit in the upper right of the media direct buttons? Switch on the left should be towards you. Try Winsock2 How to determine and to recover from Winsock2 corruption in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, and in Windows Vista or try running WinSock XP Fix

Can you connect in safe mode with networking(tap F8 on startup)?

It may be malware related. Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

If the unit is new or under waranty, then try contacting Dell Tech Support.

Hi

No, WIFI is not lit up on the keyboard, but the switch is in the correct position. I wasn't able to connect in safe mode, and I ran a full malware scan but no problems were found.

I tried downloading the latest drivers again using internet explorer instead of the Dell download manager, and in the course of of running the installer - I think it was while the previous drivers were being uninstalled - I got a message saying "WLTRYSVC.EXE has stopped working". The installation completed and I got another message saying that there's a problem with my WLAN card and that Windows would notify me if a solution became available.

Thanks again!

FIXED!!!!

In Quickset, there's a Radio Control Options button. I launched it and in the Advanced Settings, there's a "Radio Control Options" tab. I unchecked all the boxes so that the wireless switch controls none of the radios, and my WIFI came to life immediately.

Thanks for all your suggestions - especially Quickset!

 ococyar,

Kinda forgot about that button. I do not change any of those settings. I do use the Fn key and the right arrow key to control the brightness of the backlit keyboard, depending on the time of day.

Take care,

I ran into this problem and I found the wireless driver installed without issue in device manager. I did the uninstall (with the delete files check box), reinstalled everything, reinstalled Quickset. Launched Quickset and the wireless card was greyed out. Tried the FN + F2 to enable the wireless, no onscreen overlay with the wireless toggling from off to on. Here's the kicker, it wasn't the wireless card at all. The issue for me was the Function Key. Somehow in Quickset the function key was set to multimedia instead of function. I confirmed this by hitting F2 alone without the Fn key and pop, wireless card was working. Naturally I went back into Quickset and switched it from multimedia to function.

So I'm having the same problem.  I was able to get into the Advanced Settings and when I tried to go to the Radio Control Options, a message popped up saying:

"This setting has been locked in the BIOS setup. Please contact your system administrator"

I am the Admin on my computer.

I clicked OK and everything is grayed out.

How do I fix?
