system standby and internet connection

I'm at college where I am connected to a LAN, a pretty fast one too. I own a Dimension 8400 and my power settings are such that my pc goes to standby after 30 minutes. But all my internet related applications, like messengers, get disconnected. I dont remember my old pc having a problem with this. Is there a way to keep my programs connected to the internet and still go into standby or hibernation?

I believe the LAN connection times out after a period of inactivity, such as when your computer is in standby.  One alternative is to extend the standby period or turn it off completely, leaving the computer on all the time.

Is it ok to leave the computer on all the time? I've heard both sides say opposing things, such as it wont hurt at all, and that computers arent meant to be left on all the time

I don't leave mine on all the time because I don't need to, but if keeping your messages going, you are forced to.  It should be fine to leave on, just be sure to clean the dust buildup occasionally from the vents, particularly the power supply area.
