Too Slow for a DSL - Hhjacked?

Last month, she had DSL installed & it was fine - she really liked the speed. My friend's Dell recently dramatically slowed down. But I don't know if her computer was hijacked or what but I included it anyway. (below) 

Here are a few other things that have happened: 

1) Whenever she has to restart the pc - Ad-aware starts up at the same time, (Ad-aware isn't scheduled) there aren't any Desktop Items on the screen.  But once she cancels or Ad-aware is finished, then the Desktop items come back.

2) She wrote down this message that she got:

    "Checking file C

     NTFS

     One disk need to be ck'd for consistency

     CHDSK is verifying files

      ORPHAN FILES"
