transfering files from old computer to new one

how do i transfer files from my old computer to my new one if my new computer didn't come with a back up windows xp cd? how do i transfer my files with no wizard CD, no floppy drive, windows ME on my old computer and windows XP on my new computer, using an RJ45 cable?  will some one please help me.  i'm usually really great with computers but this is one thing i have never done before.  the people at the 1-800 # for dell support were not helpfull and i'm running out of options. some body please respond to my cry for help.

I've never heard of a "wizard CD".  If you didn't get a Windows XP CD, then you should call Dell Tech Support and request.  Neither of these are needed to transfer files, however.  If both computers have an ethernet network adapter, all you need to do is connect them together with a special network cable, called a cross-over cable, set up a local network, enable File and Printer Sharing, designate drivers or folders as shared resources, then copy things back and forth using Windows Explorer.  For a tutorial on setting up the network, see www.homenethelp.com
