Trouble KEEPING wireless connection with Netgear router...

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 1501 (with Windows XP). I already had a NetGear WGR614 router for my previous laptop (Comp*q) that hit the can.
I am having trouble getting the Dell to KEEP the wireless connection. The majority of the time it barely recognizes my SSID even when my laptop is in the same room and the signal is strong. I have tried everything I can think of. The settings look correct as it first worked right out of the box. Windows ran some updates, I left to run some errands, came back -  and poof no internet or network.
I would appreciate any help or suggestions.
Thanks,
Mel

Have you tried changing the channel that your router uses?  Do you have the latest firmware running on the router?  Have you set the power management settings on your wireless network adapter to always supply full power?

AWESOME! So far changing the channel on my router settings helped. Thanks! Who knew...
Happy Holidays.
If it goes out of whack again, I will try your other suggestions. Thanks again,
~Mel
