Trouble logging onto a web site

It's the Melbourne University student portal (web address below). I downloaded a free version of Opera and tried using that as the browser but got the same error message. Do you think it is worth trying with Mozilla Firefox too?

I tried to login using both Internet Explorer 7 and Mozilla Firefox and had no problems. The website is NOT a secure login but I didn't have any problems. I just enetered a fake username and password and got the usual login failed message.

Open Internet Explorer 7, click on tools, manage add-ons, enable or disable add-ons. Disable all of them except flash and java add only what you need it will work but if you find the wrong one, then it will not work.

Try using Mozilla Firefox and log in. Unknown it you'll need to use the IE Tab add-on or not.

Thanks so much for your suggestions. I can also get the usual logon failed message by using an incorrect login. If I do use a correct login I get the message that "this page contains secure and non secure items" and once I accept this message I get the error "Error: An unexpected error occured. Please try again" 

I tried disabiling the add-ons in IE7 and using Mozilla but got the same result. I guess this implies that it is not actually the login page that is giving trouble it is the first page of the student portal. I haven't got Flash installed - I wander if that could be causing the issue?

You can try installing the latest Java. You can also test your Flash player here, but you have to do this for all browsers, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox as they use different versions of Flash Player.

There was i9ssues with Operating systems using 64-bit. The secret was to use Mozilla Firefox or open start, all programs and ise the Internet Explorer that did NOT say 64-bit. This would let you use the 32-bir version of Internet Explorer and thus everything works.

If everything fails, then the problem is with the website and shold be reported to someone.

Hi Rick,

Thanks so much for your assistance. The problem has finally been solved. You won't believe what it was... I copied my favourites from old PC to new and the actual URL had specific information which was no longer relevant. So the site kept on acting as if I already had an active session based on my URL data but when it tried to authenticate me it was finding a discrepancy. Very obscure! Anyhow it is now fixed.
