Trouble Seeing Network With 2350 Router

My 2350 router is up and running after downloading network drivers from the Dell download site. The CD that came with the router was defective. I have router hooked up to 4300 and DSL modem. I am connecting to the internet on my 9300 notebook using a wireless network adapter. Internet also working on 4300.

My problem is I cannot get file or print sharing to work. I have set firewall to allow sharing and have power cycled the router several times. I can also ping and access a linux system through the 9300 that is wired hard wired into the router. What I can't do is ping the 9300 IP address. When I run ipconfig on the notebook, I get an IP of XXX.XXX.2.3, but cannot get it to ping from any location. I can ping the router, default gateway(XXX.XXX.2.1), the 4300 (XXX.XXX.2.2) and the Linux box (XXX.XXX.2.10). I have no manual due to the bad CD. The problem seems to be the same with or wothout the Linux system connected. Any suggestions?

I have Windows firewall and Norton's firewall set to allow file & print sharing. Would that be a cause of not being able to ping my local IP address?

Are you sure you don't have any other firewalls running that are not properly configured to allow local network traffic?  Many people forget that software packages like Norton Internet Security and McAfee Security Center have firewalls.

4300 and 9300 are both XP/SP2. On the 9300 the Win firewall is turned off and Norton set to allow file/print sharing. Workgroup names are the same. User name and passwords are different.

Van,

Check email but...

Just validating system state....and a few basic checks...

Are both machines XP Pro and d o both have SP2?

You said you were running win and nort firewalls so I have to assume that one is running Windows Firewall and the other is running Norton Firewall - or did I misunderstand?

Are the workgroup names different or the same?

Are the user and password combos the same for each machine?

Alternatively you can pass the username\pass of the machine you are connecting to - it just gets annoying if it doesn't get cached...

You stated firewalls are both allowing F&P so I have to assume norton has set perms for the network...

If all that jives then the next thing is to play with DNS\NetBIOS - hardcoding the hosts file...

Verify the Computer Browser service\Network Location Awareness services are running and not disabled....

The first test should be typing the IP address and the share name in an explorer window?
You should get prompted for credentials...

IE:

START | RUN | EXPLORER - click OK

In the address location type (without quotes)

\\192.168.x.\ press enter

You should either see the volume contents or get queried for user creds...
