I'm new to 802.11g so this suggestion is based on no experience whatsoever, but maybe there's a driver setting for the 1300 that can be changed when you know you're definitely on an 802.11b network? Have you poked around in there? Do you see any sort of speed or negotiation setting that can be changed from "Auto" to "11mbps" or "802.11b"?
i am not an expert but i poked around the properties screen not adjusting anything just looking, and i found this one part called ibss mode and it says 802.11 b so i think that answers that but not really sure, is that what your talking about or maybe there is another setting?
hi sorry something happened to the body of my letter, anyway i just brought a new inspirion 8500 with a truemobile 1300 802.11b/g and in my home i have an actiontec 802.11b wireless router and this combo is slow as molasses i mean it feels like 56k arrrrggghhh! so i download the drivers for the truemobile still the same, i then pulled out my old actiontec 802.11b pc card out of my broken inspiron 4100 to see if i see a difference and wow big difference from the truemobile, do i need to maybe get new firmware for the router so it can talk better to the truemobile? i know 802.11g is backward compatable with 802.11b so what gives, any advice would be appreciated, ps the link is excellent with both, getting 11mbps with all bars green if that means anything, pss i want to get a new router i hear good things about the dell truemobile 2300 router, do you recommend it....oh yeah thanks for reponding....
the next thing i did today was download new firm ware from the actiontec website which flashes the memory on the router, it was dated this past june 2003, but still no difference still slow as heinz ketchup commericial, what should i do next...
well the last thing i did this weekend was is reseat the true mobile 1300 card, and still slow as molassase, if anyone has anymore advise please inform because i am 2 seconds away from customder support, very unhappy thanks...

FWIW, I changed out the Truemobile 1180 802.11b miniPCI in my Inspiron 4150 for a 1300 802.11g and it gets a much weaker signal from the same spot. I'm using the lastest Broadcom driver for it (3.30.15, available on HP's webiste) but no change. I've boosted the power output of the router (Linksys WRT54G) from 19mW to 84mW (caused the signal to go from unuseable to barely useable lol). Just bought some higher gain antennae for the router; I'll install them later on today and let you know how it goes.

I went back to the 1180. It gets a strong signal with the 5.5dBi antennae without having to use a booster. The 1300 just doesn't have the receive sensitivity of the 1180 I guess.
yeah i got tired of messing with this thing so i ended up just buying the dell truemobile 2300 router and it seems much faster, the only thing that my signal flucuates a little, from lets say from 54mps to 48mps i was wondering if there is a certain channel that is stronger, i have the router on channel 11 as i heard on these forums that the cordless phones dont use that channel if there is a better one please tell, just so you know the router is above me upstairs but not far, thanks,
