Trying to network two Dimension computers... help!

I have two Dell computers that I despretely need to network together. I've tried running the Home Network Wizard on both but the network does not show.

The computers are a Dimension 9100 and a 9150

Any ideas?

What type of connections are you trying to make?  Router or ICS?

Thanks for the mail Jim - getting desperate and I really know nothing about networking. I'm trying to connect them directly (not sure if that either router or ICS) - just using a network cable from network connection ports on the back of the PC.

Getting really desperate - have loads of video production work on one PC that I have to get moved onto the other.

Pretty soon there will be tears!

iwhelan,

Note that when you directly connect two PCs together, you must use a special networking cable called a "crossover cable."  A regular, straight-through ethernet cable will not work.

Which OS's are involved?  Which folders are you trying to share?  Is there a third party firewall running?

An tears there were!

I got the correct cable last night - linked up the Dimension 9100 and the Dimension 9150 - ran the home network wizard. Some success - my old PC is now accessing the internet through the network I have set up through my new computer.

However I cannot get access to files on either PC. I've tried sharing folders but it just does not see them.

Getting desperate - help!!!

Sure sounds like either Mcaffee or Norton Firewalls are running.  With XP Home you can only share the My Docs folder and nothing else.  Is File & Print Sharing enabled?  See the previous links.

More than likely it is the firewall issue.
