Trying to set up router and get error message
I just bought 530s PC with Vista. It is connected to internet via cable broadband. It is installed with 10/100 and 802.11g wirelss card. I DO NOT think I will be using wireless card. I also purchased 1525Inspiron laptop with Vista. I want to use the LAPTOP WIRELESSLY, so they installed the 802.11g card in the laptop. They sent me router, Netgear WGR614. I went through all the steps, disconnected internet modem and connected it to NETGEAR, then used Netgear cable to connect to broadband router. All the lights say all is good. However, when I get to the part where they ask for a user id and password, I get error message after trying to set one up. It reads: "401 unauthorized, client has not provided correct authentication." So what's up? I have the Netgear disk in PC where I thought it's supposed to be! I also get no internet connection on PC, unless I disconnect everything and by pass the Netgear router.

Note that if you are changing the connection to modem between a computer and a router, you need to do a complete reset of the network every time you make the change. To do this, shut everything off. Wait about 5 minutes. Turn on the modem first, and wait another 5 minutes. Then turn on the device that is connected directly to the modem (either the router or the computer), then turn on any other computers that will connect through the router.
A cable modem remembers the last device connected to it and will NEVER connect to a different device until the above reset procedure is performed.

To help troubleshoot this problem, on the computer with the problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

This ipconfig output appears to have been run while the computer was connecting sucessfully to the cable modem. Try resetting the network, as described previously, connect the router to the modem, then connect this computer to the router and run the ipconfig command again. Post the results.

That ipconfig output shows that you are making a connection to the router. The only reason you would not be getting an internet connection is if the router is not making a connection to the cable modem. Are you you should be able to log into the router's configuration pages and see if the router is getting a valid ip address from the modem (i.e. it should be similar to the ip address you got when you were directly connected to the modem - 76.88.12.36). If the router is not getting an IP address from the modem, it may be because you are not doing the reset procedure exactly as I described.
