Unable to connect to internet

Have a Vostro 1500 using Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN mini-card.  Get good connection and no errors running troubleshooting program.  A network expert buddy can connect with his laptop to the wireless router and said everything was working ok.  My machine will send out 80 bytes but none come back.  He thinks that its a hardware problem.

wlan card utility:

ssid:  ok

speed: 54.0 Mbps

Channel: 6

radio streams: 1

ap mac address:  00:14:95:35:70:FA

gateway ip address:  192.168.1.254

client ip address 192.168.1.66

client ipv6 address:  not available

All diagnostics ok

ran ipconfig/all

Host Name:  Drlynn

Primary Dns Suffix:

IP Routing Enabled : no

Wins proxy enabled:  no

Ethernet adapter wireless network connection"

connection-specific dns suffix:

description:  dell wireless 1390 wlan mini-card

dhcp enabled: no

ip address: 192.168.1.66

subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

default gateway: 192.168.1.254

dns servers: 192.168.1.254

any suggestions?

Set the TCP/IP properties on the wireless card to "Obtain an IP address automatically".  I It is currently set to a static IP address that may not be in the range of addresses that the router assigns.

Thanks Steve for the response.

Originally it was set to automatically obtain the IP address.  The network guy helping me over-rode it manually trying to get it to connect.  Would get the same problem either way.  He used his laptop with the same information to connect to my network.  His would, mine would not.  Any other ideas?  Lynn

Change it back to obtain an IP address automatically, since that is the way it is supposed to work and the only way I can be sure the next troubleshooting steps give the us the correct information, is if it is working the way it is supposed to.

Then, boot to Safe Mode with Network Support and see if you can connect to the internet.  If you can then it tells us that something running from startup in Normal Mode is blocking the connection.   If you can't, then post the ipconfig output again and we can go from there.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone found a resolution to this issue, as I'm having the same problem. I've had my Inspiron 1525 for about 3 months & 3 weeks ago it began being unable to connect to the Internet. I have broadband & a 1390 WLAN mini-card. Dell told me to do a system restore to the last date I was able to connect. This worked, but I had to do it daily.  I finally disabled Windows automatic updates & this solved this issue, mostly. I got an iPod & was completely unable to access iTunes. I know it's something with the 1525 because I finally loaded iTunes onto my 7 year old desktop & I can access it fine there. I spent 4.5 hours on the phone with Apple & 2 hours online with Dell & still no resulotion.

Any suggestions?

Steve, I did as you said and went into safemode with networking.  Still am unable to connect with Internet Explorer.  Ran the ipconfig.  It does not list the wireless anywhere.  Only thing listed is Ethernet adapter local area connection media state:  Media disconnected. Get the same message for ethernet adapter wireless network connection.   I can't seem to find a way to get access to verify if the ip address changed to automatic in safe mode.  No network places, no icons on lower bar.  My network is listed but unable to determine ip address when I look at properties.  My dell wireless wlan card utility lists nothing.

Rebooted in regular mode and ran ipconfig with following info:

Ethernet adapter wireless network connection:

connection-specific dns suffic:  blank

autocinfiguration ip address :  169.254.14.18

subnet mask:  255.255.0.0

default gateway:  169.254.14.18

Went back into tcp/ip properties and both obtain ip address automatically and dns server address automatically are checked.

Ethernet adapter local area connection:  media state:  media disconnected.

Like the last post, I recently installed a quicktime update and loaded the ipod program at the same time.  Problem started after that.  I uninstalled all.  Would not work.  Tried to restore to previous point, but get error message unable to do so even on restore points that are there.

The auto configuration address (169.254.*.*) means the computer failed to get an IP address from its DHCP request, and defaulted to the APIPA address instead.

Does the same thing happen if you connect to the router using a network cable?

Steve,

We tried that when working with my network helper and it worked fine when connecting by ethernet cable.  The ipconfig recognized it and I could access the internet.  Thanks for your continued help.  Lynn

If you reinstalled XP, Rhodry04, then you'll have to reinstall all the drivers for your system as well.
