Unable to enter 10-digit encryption key
I'd like to connect to a wireless network at my client's offices. I was given a 10-digit encryption key to enter, but Client Manager will only accept 5 or 13 digit keys (13 for WEP). I have a Gold card. Can I do upgrade card firmware or software drivers to allow the key to work? Below are the latest diagnostics:
-------------begin diagnostics---------------------
Date: 2004/01/25 08:16:38
OS: Windows NT Version 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4
Variant 1, Version 2.58 of Client Manager
Variant 2, Version 7.44 of NDIS 5 Miniport driver
Variant 2, Version 1.02 of Embedded Card
Dell Gold Card
Enhanced WEP encryption allowed
IEEE high-speed data rates

IO base:DF40
IRQ number:10
Variant 1, Version 4.04 of Primary Functions firmware
Variant 2, Version 8.10 of Station Functions firmware
Diagnose OK
Radio link Ok but unable to retrieve AP name.
--------------end diagnostics----------
Thanks!

Ten characters won't work for either size WEP.
Some systems allow the user to type in a pass phrase and then a key is generated, but those systems are vendor specific.
Suggest you talk with whoever gave you the 10 character key.

If the user interface for your radio card can be coaxed into entering WEP keys directly in hex, the 10 character key you have should work for it.
If the key you've been given maps to something sensible in ASCII, you might have some luck asking for the ASCII equivalent key.
If not, then funk software produce a client manager that would work under NT 5.0 (Microsoft have been rumoured to be considering the possiblity of releasing one, but this seems unlikely as they are trying to migrate users to 5.1).
