Unable to install Modem drivers

sgoel: sounds like you actualy got the pctel modem that is supost to be in there try the driver on the disk that came with the laptop.. if ya dont have it just go to the driver download page and get the pctel driver here...  http://support.dell.com/FileLib/Type.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&Category=20&OS=WW1&OSL=EN&SvcTag=&SysID=INS_PNT_CEL_1100&DeviceID=1058

 wayne: yea the back woods computing circles are deffinetly cool except no dsl no cable modem only dial up and that has to go over 30 miles to the nearest dial up server....  we had thought about satelite internet through direct tv but cost is still to high....as for the squirels they are on to me i hear um in the trees but they stay out of site...lol.... now banana spiders them we gots o bunch of them....

Even though my modem issue is resolved, the replacement modem that Dell sent last Friday arrived yesterday.  I opened the box to retrieve the return packing slip to find a refurbished PCTEL modem with PCTEL modem drivers.  It makes you wonder if Dell has any idea of what they are installing in their computers.

Ah, thank God for that. Thanks for this thread! R57260 just worked for me on new Inspiron 5100. PCTel and Connexant drivers supplied were both wrong

Remember to remove the existing modem before you try to install this correct driver!

i have the same problem with my new inspiron 1100, which i received 2 weeks ago.

the modem never worked, as i have reinstalled the drivers ( from the dell resources CD ) many and may times.

i am going to try the Broadcom driver and see if it will work.

is there a way to know the brand and model of the model  in my inspiron 1100,  without opening the back of the laptop ? 

i saw a reply mentioning about the type of modem is displayed in the BIOS, how can it tell ?  I look into the BIOS and never see any info about the internal modem, maybe i miss something,  please let  me know

I was about to toss my Inspiron5100 out the window.  Spent 2 days on that issue with Dell support, I don't know what brought me here but from now on, this forum will be my first stop.... You shall be voted Forum Ambassador :-)

As you may have notice, the same wrongly suggested drivers (PCTel and Connexant) also applies to the 5100 series.

wow, it is working within a minute, BOOM, when i install the broadcom driver.  i open up the back of the laptop and saw the modem is broadcom.  lucky i am to look into this forum before calling the technical support.  now the modem is working fine and i can surf the net.  thanks for all of you and your advises.

it is strange to see Dell is not doing something about this !!! and even strange to see their tech people do not know what is going on.  maybe they should spend some time looking into the problems mentioned in the forum to update their knowledge with customer frustrations.

Naw, then the rest of us wouldn't have anything to do!      You are right though; this is a major snafu that needs to be addressed!

I am not sure whether my PCtel modem is working or not, but recently I downloaded a patch from Windows website for PCtel modem and after that the driver has stopped showing the semicolon mark on it and now computer also does not tell me that my modem may not work properly. I guess it will be worth trying.
