Unable to network w/ printer
Yesterday bought a Linksys wireless router for desktop and network adapter for the notebook. Finally got the darn thing to work after a day and a half of phone calls and system tweaking.
The only problem I seem to be having now is that I can print from the desktop but for the life of me I can't seem to link into the printer and print a document from the notebook. Have gone to the "Add printer" wizard but still can't get it to work.
What can be the problem and is it something fairly simple I'm just not thinking of.
Need some help. Thanks
Grace

I also have a question on this subject, does the computer that the printer is hooked up to have to be on in order for the wireless computer can print? The printer is always turned on in sleep mode but the PC is not.

Grace,
Is File and Printer Sharing installed on the computer that connects directly to the printer? Is the printer designated as a shared printer on the computer that it is connected to? Which version of Windows is running on each computer? Have you tried adding a port for the printer on the computer that will access it over the network (the laptop)? You should be able to browse to find the port, but you can also add it by designating it in the form - \\computername\printername where computername is the network name of the computer to which the printer is attached and printername is the shared name of the printer as designated on the computer to which the printer is attached.

yakon,
It is often difficult to answer several questions in the same thread. It gets confusing and is impolite to the person who originally started the thread. In the future, please post a new message rather than jumping into an existing thread. Yes, the computer to which the printer is attached has to be powered on in order for that printer to be accessed on the network.

Steve,
I did change to file and print sharing on the XP but did not change the port, at least I didn't think I did, on the Win 2000 laptop. Apparently I went in the right direction but got stuck because was unable to figure out what exactly they need me to enter ( the wording was so confusing I couldn't tell if they wanted the network name, computer name or something totally different). Now that I see the form it should take I'll try that.
Thanks for the suggestions. Hopefully this will solve my problem.
