When you reinstalled the operating system, did you install the desktop/notebook system utility and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Yes, Mac Address filter can make a difference. I would suggest they use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings, I use channel 11.

Depending on the wireles adapter, go to device manager, network, your network adapter, advanced. Some adapters have a setting called Antenna Diversity. If this has it, try changing it from Auto to Aux.

You can always try  WinSock XP Fix

XP needs to have at least XP SP2 installed to coinnect to WPA Security.

Wireless N routers need to be set for mixed mode for wireless b/g devices. It defeats the wireless N function, unless it's a dual band router.

G = 2.4GHz

N = 5.0GHz

Thanks, I have to assume the drivers are OK since it works fine on my network, and everything shows OK in device manager.

I will try WinSockFix.

I will check his router configuration to see if MAC address filtering is enabled. I will also make sure that his router is setup as a 'mixed' network since the laptop that won't connect uses a 'G' adapter. Maybe he has his router set up as 'N' only?

Thanks, yes, SP3 is installed. I now suspect that the wireless adapters security may be configured incorrectly. For example: The router may be set up with WPA2 with AES. And the laptop adapter might be set up as WEP with TKIP.

WEP has been a problem to connect to. I'm thinking that maybe he should use the Recommended Wireless Router Settings

Setting up/Troubleshooting a Wireless Network

My small list of known issues, Belkin routers have trouble connecting some wireless devices using WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security(Personal). It cannot determine the difference between WPA-PSK and WPA-AES, causing issues. Currently working with another member(or two) with trying to get them connected to a Thompson Router. I suspect the router and sent them out in the field to test their computers at a local hotspot.

Keep me posted. I install WinSock XP Fix on the old XP computers I own. That has helped when the Winsock becomes corrupt. Peer to peer programs corrupt the winsock settings and the quickest is to use the winsockxpfix, simple but effective.

Thanks, I will be checking his router settings using the free remote assist/access program CrossLoop. If I can't determine exactly what the problem is I will disable all security [temporarily] to see if anything changes then go from there.
