Unable to run ipconfig

I have a Dimension 4400 running Win XP Pro (SP2) that is networked to an NT4 system using a Belkin Router and connect to the Internet through an ADSL modem (connected to the Router).

Everything works fine. I can access the Internet, access my mail and "talk" to and from the NT4 system.

However, when I go into DOS (select "run" from the start menu and enter cmd) and then type ipconfig the system tells me "ipconfig is not recognised as an internal or external command.......". Even typing "net view" or trying to ping results in the same response.

Since I have a triple boot system I decided to boot into the second copy of Windows XP Pro (on the same computer; the third OS is Linux).  With this running I was able to run ipconfig, net view and ping. Similarly I can issue the same commands from my NT4 system and get the correct responses.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong please?

This usually a result of a virus or malware on the system, but not always.

Here is a fix

you should scan the drive or partiton from another PC for viruses and malware first.

Thanks mombodog. I went to bed last night thinking about this problem and thought that maybe I ought to check my autoexec.bat file. With the advent of Windows you forget about these things. Sure enough, the path command was inadequate so I included "path = windows\system32" and this has resolved the problem.

Interstingly, when I telephoned a well known Support Company (as I had just bought a new wired/wireless router with ADSL modem and, whereas I could connect to the other computers on my network I couldn't dial out) they had not detected the omission in my autoexec.bat!!!!

Now to get back to the real issue of sorting out my new router......................

Must have been a "young" tech from the support company.  Probably never heard of AUTOEXEC.BAT  or  CONFIG.SYS
