Unable to Uninstall Linksys WPC54G Wireless Card driver and software

I have a Linksys WPC54G card for a Dell Latitude CPxJ650 running Win98 SE. It has worked with a WRT54G wireless router. I use it so I can connect to the net away from the docking station.

The card stopped working after I installed another program. The WPC54G program still seemed to run but the icon did not come up in the System Tray where would do so when it was running. Now I am unable to uninstall and reinstall the WPC54G software. When I tried to uninstall it, the Uninstall wizard ran and I got the "Finish" button on the last window. After clicking on Finish, the WPC54g and Uninstall shortcuts were still on the Start/Programs list so I deleted them. It turns out that the software was still on the computer. When I tried to Install the software the Install Wizard said the driver and software had been previously installed and the Install Wizard stopped. The WPC54G program keeps showing up in the program list after repeatedly using Add/Remove Programs under Control Panel to remove the wireless card program. The Install Wizard still won't work even after I removed the card in the Device Manager. Please tell me how I can uninstall completely the wireless card software and drivers.  Thank you.

Thanks.  I'll give it a try.

Will check out the current drivers too.

With the card installed in the slot go into Device manager and delete it there. Then shut down, remove the card, restart the PC, reinstall the drivers and utility, follow the prompts, then insert the card. By the way Linksys just posted a new driver and utility for this card which allows you to use WPA security on a 98SE OS. It includes the Funk WPA client.

I did as you suggested and deleted the driver from the device manager with the card in the slot. After powering down, removing the card, and rebooting, I checked the the Add/Remove Program Properties and the card softwrae was still listed.   I tried to remove the software but it was still present after it went throught the removal.  I tried to reinstall the card software but the Wizard stopped and it said the driver and software were already installed.  The new driver and utility would not install either.

Can you suggest anything else to try?

Thanks.

Well at this point I would look at the new program you installed. As it seems the problem started after installing this program. Try uninstalling that program then insert the WPC and see if you can uninstall the software. When I suggested to uninstall/remove/delete from "Device Manager" I was talking about the card not just the driver. You should also try that.

Also since you are running 98 it might be time to save all your data and wipe/format the HDD and do a complete reinstall of the OS and your software. I know this sound drastic but with 98, 98SE and ME it's the best thing to do every now and then. The registry in these OSs gets very big over time and then problems start. Doing this will also make the PC run faster. At least that has been my, and others, experience.
