USB vs PCI cards for wireless network

We are planning on purchasing two new Dells (8400s with XP Pro) with a wireless internet connection. When we spoke to our Cable company two different technicians strongly advised us NOT to use USB wireless cards, but to go with PCI wireless ethernet cards to set up our wireless networking system. They say that drivers from other peripherals using USB 2 connections often interfere with the USB wireless cards, and we are likely to run into trouble. They are getting many calls with just such difficulties.

The problem is that the Dimension 8400s have only 1 or 2 usable PCI slots, depending on what video card you get. So if I use a PCI for my wireless card, I will have nothing left. Does anyone else here have any comments about the use of USB wireless cards vs PCI slot wireless ethernet cards? Thanks for any guidance - we are pretty new to wireless networks and are somewhat clueless.

I'm using USB wireless in two computers with no problems, but I don't have a lot of USB 'stuff' on either system - just a scanner, printer, mp3 player, digital card reader, and a Palm cradle.

On my Poweredge SC420, I have a 120gb USB hard drive, a USB Zip Drive, a USB gamepad, a USB calculator graph link, 3 USB LED light tubes, and a USB Wifi Adapter. I have no interference and can get signals from all around the neighborhood.

I am trying to install a Linksys USB network adapter in my Dimension 2400 with XP Pro.  After an hour or so on the phone with Linksys support, we found a discrepancy between the OS and the Linksys drivers.  Just happened last night so no resolution as yet from Microsoft.  Will post back if I find more useful info.  BTW, have not tested with other USB devices as yet.

Is it unique to XP Pro? I use a Linksys USB adapter problem free. I did, however, have a problem with the Linksys software. Once I uninstalled it and just installed the bare driver, things were perfect.

In case this is still timely, I have tried installing two different Linksys USB adapters on XP Pro, Dimension 2400 with no luck.  I think it is XP Pro causing the problem because the hardware is recognized by the computer and I can't imagine that both adapters would be bad.  I have been through four hours of trouble shooting with Linksys and Dell.  Dell thinks it is the OS.  I stopped there and will go at this again.  HOpe this info helps and good luck.
