Want to uninstall internal modem without physically removing it

I have a Dimension 4600 with internal Conexant modem.  Following a thunderstorm the modem is out of action.  I have bought a USB external modem, but it won't work unless I uninstall the internal modem.  Each time I use Device Manager to uninstall the internal modem, plug and play reinstalls it.  Is there a way to permanently uninstall the internal modem without opening the PC to take it out (I am reluctant to do this)?

Thanks............Robin

No.  The internal modem will have to be physically removed.  Even if you were not using any modem it would still be better to remove the defective device as it could cause other system problems or even internal PC power problems depending on how it's damaged.
