Web Browsers crash or whatever the term is ?

For about a month now or so, after these past newer Windows updates, my Firefox web browser and Internet Explorer web browser suddenly stops working when I'm online.  That happens a few times and I'm sick of it! When that happens I have to restart my computer. What's causing this and what can I do to correct this?

I've uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it, thinking the problem was from their side. No change.  I tried using just Internet explorer but also stops working unexpectedly.

I'm using Windows Vista Home Basic, Inspiron 1520.  I think that's all the info. :emotion-9:

Let's start with Zone Alarms and remove it, it's a firewall and link scanner. I've had this cause these failures recently and I don't know if it was due to an errant update or what. Once it's removed open IE after a restart, if it says it can't connect click on diagnose problem, if it reports a network stub error tell it to fix the issue and try again. Let  me know if that gets the browsers back up.  Mike

Great, Zone Alarm resets the Windows firewall to on when it uninstalls so you should be good to go. I recommend Comodo Firewall for those not using Vista. It monitors outbound connections which XP does not. I would stick with AVG as it's free for personal use as is Comodo's firewall. Windows defender is way behind the curve on threats so I'd unload it as AVG is more robust. Glad I could help.  Mike

Updated:

I finished scanning for viruses and spyware but nothing. What could be causing this? :emotion-7:

Here are my results.

These are what I got after scanning the whole computer for viruses.

Using "AVG Anti-virus Free"

I always get most of these cookies when I run the AVG anti virus scan.

I ran the "Windows Defender" in "Full Scan" and it came up with this:

"No unwanted or harmful software detected. Your computer is running normally."

The spyware showed nothing either.

Raindew, a peice of malware or a rootkit could be causing havoc with the network connections which would crash the browsers. Get Hijackthis.zip from the web even if you have to use another computer and memory stick to get it. Run it and post those results and maybe we can locate the problem. AVG and most all the others have trouble detecting some of these programs.

Awesome! Thanks Mike. You're a lifesaver! :emotion-2: I've been having such a difficult time getting help with this over at microsoft forums.

I'm testing Firefox and it's still holding up good. I even opened up a few tabs which also caused the browser to stop and everything seems to be running smoothly. :emotion-2: Thanks to you!

I have a question.  I have AVG and Windows Firewall running.  Do I need to install a firewall or is Windows Firewall good enough? I'm using Vista Basic Home Edition.

Hi,

I won't pretend I'm anything like an IT expert but I would recommend uninstalling IE8- I have experienced a whole host of problems I put down to virus/malware or file corruption, and there are a few people having problems with this latest version of MS browser.

My PC booted up quicker and behaved itself a whole lot better after removing it.

Simply go to Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/ scroll down to Internet Explorer 8 and remove - it will revert back to previous version.

Hi Mike. :emotion-2:Okay, I uninstalled Zone Alarm and restarted the computer. I then clicked on IE a few times and each time, it took me directly to my homepage.  But before I came to post you the results, I was going to turn on Windows firewall in case but it said it was on.  I'm not sure if it turned on automatically or I had it on too, lol. So far IE and Firefox are behaving. Do I need to reinstall Zone Alarm or will Windows Firewall is enough?

Awesome! :emotion-2:

How do I choose the noscript add on for Firefox?   I tried Comodo before but I'm going to try it again.

Edited: I just checked Cnet Downloads and I can't decide which Comodo is best for my laptop (vista). Any suggestions? Here's the list of choices:

http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=comodo+firewall&tag=srch%3Ba&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows

In firefox click on tools, add ons, get add ons and type noscript into the box. Install it and restart firefox, this will give you java script protection in firefox to stop driveby malware installs.  Mike

I've decided to keep the Windows firewall but I did get the noscript add on like you suggested. I'm so excited that the browser if working good again.  Thanks so much for all your help. :emotion-2:

You're welcom, but actually I'm a network consultant so this is everyday stuff. When you said "browsers" I assumed you had more than one and Firefox is a good choice as is Opera. I'd add noscript as an add on to Firefox just to be safe. The Vista firewall was "improved" to filter outbound connections as well as inbound. I like Comodo because it gives you very specific control of all items accessing the network connection. Once the firewall is "trained" it's very easy to detect errant apps/malware trying to connect to the internet and it's also easy to get help with. Mike
