Wifi problem XPS15 L521X - Killer Wireless-N 1202

Hi all,

My new XPS 15 L521X arrived this morning, its a very nice machine, but I am having one problem.

I have googled this, and found lots of other people having same problem.

I have the latest driver installed.

When I put my laptop within 2m of my router, I get 13mbps download speed, but as soon as I go further then a few metres, it slows don to under 1mbps.

I am sitting with it at my desk right now, and I am onl getting 0.5mbps. I have last years XPS15 model (my old laptop) right next to it, and that's getting 17mbps.

its only about 8m from my router.

I read that the killer wireless adaptor is the best one on the xps 15.

Does anyone know anyway I can fix this? as my laptop is useless at the moment.

I mainly use my laptop for managing databases and servers, and writing websites, and with the internet speed so slow, its almost useless.

Has dell found any fix for this yet?.

I cant even watch 720p youtube videos.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

Hi,

I am currently using Windows 8 64bit pro.

But if I can get the WiFi working, I will also be dual booting it with Windows 7 64bit ultimate, red hat Linux, and ubunto.

I have already checked the driver version for the killer wireless card, and they are the latest ones available on the dell download page.

Without the wireless, the laptop is useless, and I will have to return it, which would be a shame, as it would be the best laptop for the price available if it wasn't for the WiFi issue. Thanks Corey

PS:

I have plugged in a usb wifi dougle at the moment, and I get around 14mbps with that, but it is not a permanent solution.

Hi,

I just installed the bios, and it has slightly improved the wifi speed.

now when I am at my desk I get around 2mbps (I was getting under 0.5mbps) but it is still not getting anywhere near the speed it should.

my other laptop (last years model of dell xps 15) is sitting right next to it, and that gets over 17mbps.

Is the any hardware fix that dell has found?.

as the problem is obviously hardware, as so many people have been having the problem.

I haven't dual booted yet, as I don't want to spend hours setting up another OS, when I might have to return the laptop.

Cheers

Corey

Hi Corey,

I appreciate the time and effort that you took to troubleshoot the issue. We truly regret the inconvenience that has been caused to you.

Please check the link below to download the updated drivers from the killer website:

Also, if you have firewall installed on the system kindly disable the same for sometime to check if it is conflicting with the wireless card.

Thanks and Regards

Hi,

I saw your post and have the same problem with my XPS 15 delivered yesterday. The wifi is good next to the router, but if I move further away, the speed reduces drastically.

Did Dell get back to you with a fix?

Hi,

No they haven't, but a tech guy is coming next week to replace the WiFi antenna, as well as the GPU, and HDD (graphics stopped working too, and now the HDD is broken, and the PC won't turn on).

If he doesn't fix it when he comes, I think I will return it and get something from Sony or Asus instead, as the problems I am getting r becoming a bit of a joke.

Cheers

Corey

I spoke to Dell about my wifi issue and they identified it as the antenna.

Just had a service tech come and replace the screen assembly, which contains the antenna in it. My wifi is now excellent at any range now. I recommend this fix to anyone with this problem. My system is an XPS 15 L521X with Killer Wifi card.

What do I have to do to get a Dell tech person to come fix the wireless issue on my l521x? This computer cost a lot of money and I've never been able to use it as the wireless is totally . I have all the latest drivers, bios etc been looking for all sorts of fixes since i bought it 6 weeks ago. I'd prefer to return it, but if they come out and fix it so it works that would be good too.
