Win XP ICS and Win 98
I want to use ICS on my Dim8300 (XP) to share internet access in my 2-station direct connect network with my Dim400 (Win98). My "All About XP" books tell me that is easy to do and at some point I'll give XP a floppy that I will then put in the Win98 and install some files there. Then the two machines should be networked and I can (I hope) transfer files from old to new and (if I want) get to the internet from the old machine through the new one, or maybe use machine two as print server for the primary machine.
Now, suppose I later seperate the two boxes and want to have the Dim400 connect directly to internet without going thru the other machine. What will I need to do for that to work? Are the files & changes applied to the old machine strictly related to the networking setup, or do they affect how the slave machine perceives his internet connection? Will I need to take any special action?

First of all, I advise against using the ICS setup wizard to set up the network and is it usually causes problems. Instead, use the tutorial at www.homenethelp.com . If the Windows 98 computer is set up correctly to obtain an IP address automatically, then you should be able to connect it directly to the modem without having to change anything and reconnect it to the local network again without having to change anything. You may, however, have to reset the modem by turning it off for about 5 minutes when you make the switch, since many ISPs require registration of the MAC address of the computer that is connecting and this can only be done when the modem first connects to the computer (although I have no idea what a 2 station direct connect network is, so this may not apply).

I tried the Local Network Wizard last night. Followed along carefully. Useless. My Win98 machine used to talk to his Win98 bother just fine, now the only networked machine he can find is himself. The XP machine knows there is a home network, but can't even see himself and doesn't think he has admin rights to inspect it: he can't even see himself on the network.
A tech here at work once told me "With XP Microsoft finally got it right." Wrong. The only thing improved about XP over 98 is the system restore feature that seems to let you back out from the self-inflicted wounds that this lame and defective OS specializes in. I hope my restore worked, anyway.
I'll follow that link and do it the hard way.
