Windows update lowers free space on hard drive

Every time i check for a system update for windows the free space on my hard drive lowers almost one gigabyte.  This happens when even when i don't install updates.  How can i correct this thank you.

You could delete all the old update files which are in the Windows folder at the top of the list.  These start and end with $    Don't know that this will get you back 1 gig for each file though.
