Wireless Connection on my Inspiron e1705

Question

Im a member of the United States army and Im currently deployed to Iraq, so needless to say I dont really use my wireless capabilities that much. Im home on leave for two weeks and crashing at a friends place so Im trying to connect to his wireless network. My laptop will connect to the network fine but within 2 mins the connect begins to degrade until its down to 5.5mbps or less. Occasionally the connection will return to 54 but will soon after begin to degrade again.    If I directly connect to the router with a cat-5 cable (like i am now) the connection is perfect.    I have a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card. Router that im connecting to is a Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router model WPN824v2.   Im still able to access the internet, browsing various websites and such. Any help on how to keep my connection stable would be awesome.

Also we have tried two different laptops and both were able to maintain the 54 connection to the wireless router.

If you have access to the router, can you change the channel that the router uses to one of the extreme channels (1 or 11 [in U.S.] or 13 [in Europe]).   Steve

I just went into the router settings and it would only allow the value of 6 to be used.  So i changed the mode from auto 105mbps  to   'g and b'.  The other two of the four choices were 'b only' and 'g only'.  That allowed me to chose 11.   Im within touching distance of the router and im connected at 11mpbs.   Any other suggestions?

Which wireless network adapter do you have on the e1705?  Which wireless network adapter is on the other computer?   Steve

I have a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card.   the other computer has a broadcom 802.11b/g wlan.
