Wireless Connection speed

I have Dimensions 550 P4 2.8GHz HT, 1024 MB RAM, Windows media centre 2005, with Belkin F5D7001UK 108MBPS PCI card and NETGEAR
DG834GTUK
WIRELESS 108MBPS MODEM ROUTER.

I have 8 MB internet provider SKY - but the speed shown at the bottom right hand starts with 54Mbps but rapidly drops to 11Mbps or 5.5Mbps - however once the internet connection was down it showed 54Mbps. Should it not be at 108Mbps?

I have a laptop which has a negear card and it mostly shows 54Mbps which is the maximum it can get.

Can I do anything to increase the speed on wireless connection?

Thank you in advance for taking time to read and replying.

Check and make sure your Belkin PCI card can reach 108mbps using a Netgear router. OR, you can upgrade your router to wireless-N and get a wireless-N PCI card for your Dimension. Wireless-N runs at 270mbps.
