Wireless Conundrum

Yesterday evening i tried for about an hour to get my personal laptop ( Dell Inspirion 510m 1.6 Centrino) onto the wireless network at my Uni. but failed miserably. I used their help guide and everything else i know (am on placement as an I.T. Helpdesk support). The only thing i can say is that when i got home it worked instantly on my home wireless network (wanadoo router)

At uni:
  • I disabled windows firewall
  • I disabled McAffe firewall
  • I did have DHCP enabled
  • I could see the network
  • I could not connect
  • Signal stength was Optimal
  • Could not do an IP renew or config because it came back with no media connected (because i was not connected to the network yet)
  • I toggled between B and G frequencies finally setting it accept both again
  • I toggled between Infrastructure access points and ad hoc finally returning to either
  • Rebooted about 5 times to make sure settings took effect
  • Repairs on the connection failed due to no IP address.

The uni use a unsecured network. Hope this helps :) - I certainly can't figure out what i haven't tried :) !!!

Any Ideas ?

Do you not need an encryption key to get onto the university wireless network?
I suspect it worked at home because you don't have any form of encryption set up on your router.

Good point B - but sadly no - being unsecured it would actually hinder you to activate encryption. doh!
