Wireless D420

Question

We have about 8 D420. Some of them works great with wireless but s a few dont. When i use Dells build i Wireless tool i can scan the networks but nothing shows in connecting frame. But when i change the channel on the router all can connent to it. The default channel is 6.   Does anyone have any ide??

Channel 6 is right in the middle of the 2.4 Ghz frequency range and therefore the channel most subject to inteference from 2.4 Ghz wireless devices that scan the frequency range looking for a channel.  Setting the router to one of the extreme channels (1 or 11) minimizes the interference because the frequency scanners used by other 2.4 Ghz devices are less likely to end up at the ends of the range than in the middle of the range. Yes i know that channel 6 is not the best channel to have. But what i dont understand is why it works with other D420 that have the same configuration?? The computers are bought at the same time from Dell and have the same installation?   /Markus

All kinds of other factors are relevant.  Are all computers in exactly the same environment?  This means the exact same room in the exact same spot.   Steve

Yes, I have the computers side by side in the same room. I saw another case i´n the forum about the D420 and Wireless problem, Dell replaced the motherboard there, so maybe it's some kind a hardware problem.

I've got a D420 with the Intel wireless system, and I haven't had any problems with it at all. I read in a review that the Intel wireless hardware was better than the Dell module, so I ordered my system accordingly. I've had it for two weeks, and it has been working flawlessly. I've used it with my own wireless network at home, the campus network, and at other hotspots with nary an issue. If anyone here is still having problems, I would recommend upgrading to the Intel mini-card for wireless access.   -Chad Mayer D420 Core Duo 1.2GHz

My d420's work fine with wireless. Both have intel wireless card though.

btw, do yours get hot while in use? have you check the cpu temp? could you check your cooling system for me? how does it look like? does it have a copper heat pipe? pictures are here.

I have a D420 with Win XP and a Dell Wireless 1390 PCI-Express mini-card network adapter. The Wi-Fi works okay most of the time, but occasionally (usually after resuming from Stand-by or Hibernate) the Wi-Fi disappears. Usually the only way to restore the Wi-Fi is to Restart the computer.   Hope this helps.
