I am not all the familiar with router/modem combinations, but in general, if you have to set up a wireless connection before you can connect by wireless, then it would be impossible to connnect by wireless to set up the connection.
When you need to setup a wireless connection for the first time, just make sure that ur wired connection works. Which means as long as your computer is able to connect to a wired connection, thats when its reasonal to connect using wireless.
Assuming that wired is working.
Depending n the wireless router that you have, you need to connect the same cable that goes at the back of the computers socket to the one at the back of the router.
D-Link - WAN and for Lynksis - Internet.
Then using the Windows zero configuration n your computer, you need to connect and configure the connection.
We have a combo router -modem (Motorola) that is set up using a splitter to a television. The room where we have the desktop computer does not have a cable outlet. So what I am asking is do we have to hard wire the computer first to the router-modem using an Ethernet cable or can it be done without using the cable. We have both a new Dell Desktop and an new Dell laptop. The desktop is in the room without the cable outlet. Both computers have wireless capability or cards. At this point we cannot hard wire the desktop so is there another way to get this all to work?
It is a Motorola SBG900. I have looked at the on site information however I am out of my knowledge area here and can't quite figure out if I can connect the desktop up wireless. The laptop does have an ethernet adapter.
Does the laptop have an ethernet adapter? If you have to connect initially by a wired connection, it only has to be temporary, so you could just use the laptop to set it up. Since I have no details on your router/modem combo unit, I really can't give you specifics on what has to be done to set it up. As I said in my previous post, on most routers you have to first enable the wireless connection which can only be done from a wired connection since you can't connect to it by wireless until the wireless is enabled. If you don't have a manual for the router/modem combo, perhaps if you posted the make and model of the device I could find more details in the internet.
Wow-finally got both computers set up wireless. I had to use an ethernet cable to the laptop, and set up using Safe mode with networking because the Mcafee suite was causing some type of interfence. Once I was able to set up the laptop with a wirelesss connection the desktop easily found the wireless connection. All is good to go for right now. I just do not know how most people manage these setups. There is so much to know. For instance the wireless usb that I bought for the desktop said Vista Capable but there were no Vista drivers on the disc. I had to run to another house to download the drivers. Thanks Steve for the site for the manual.
