Wireless with Belkin router

I recently setup a belkin wire router with Verizon dsl the wireless portion works ok, but the desktop (gx1p) that run windows 98 I am unable to connect to the internet.  I was told that I have to to something with the tcp/ip stack can someone point me in the right direction.  The problem is the desktop
does not see the ip address of the router, it still see the ip address of the modem which is now in a bridge mode.

Thank you,

Vincent

Check and see if the TCP/IP Properties for your network connection is configured to "Obtain an IP address automatically" ("click here")...

Then use the "winipcfg" utility ("click here") to release & renew your TCP/IP connection...

If you are using a "Firewall" (i.e. ZoneAlarm, Komodo, etc.), temporarily disable it... until you can connect.

Use the "winipcfg utility" and click "Release All", then click "OK" and "Restart" the Win98 computer...

Use the "winipcfg utility", again, and click the ”More Info >>" button... the "Default Gateway" for your network adapter (or PCI Bus Master adapter) should be "192.168.2.1", which is usually the IP address for a Belkin Router.

The "DHCP Server" should also be "192.168.2.1" (Belkin Router)...

The "IP Address" should start with "192.168.2.xxx" and be within the range of "192.168.2.2" to "192.168.2.254" (i.e. - "192.168.2.102" ).
The "Subnet Mask" should be "255.255.255.0"...

If the above still produces the same result, see if you can manually set it up with a "Static IP Address":
1. Double-click My Computer, then double-click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Network icon.
3. Double-click the TCP/IP protocol bound to the PCI network adapter.
4. From the IP Address Tab, Select Specify an IP Address, and then enter an IP address, that hopefully your other computers aren't using, within the range of 192.168.2.2 to 192.168.2.254 (i.e. - "192.168.2.109" ).
5. In the Subnet Mask box, enter 255.255.255.0
6. On the Gateway tab, enter 192.168.2.1 in the New Gateway box, and then click Add.
7. On the DNS Configuration tab, click Enable DNS, and then type the Router's name in the Host box.
(Note: The name is case-sensitive.)
8. Under DNS Server Search Order, enter 192.168.2.1, and then click Add.
9. Click OK, and restart your computer when prompted.
(Note: Have your Win98 Disc ready, the computer will prompt you for it! If you have copied your Win98 Setup files to your HDD, at the prompt, you can alternatively browse to their location)

See if this helps first, before trying other things...

Did you get any error messages?
Post the complete error message, if you did...

Click "Start/Run" and type command
Click "OK"
At the command prompt, type ipconfig/all
Copy & Paste the info to your post...

What OS is the wireless (or any other) computer using?

What "model" is the Belkin Router?

I ended up installing windows xp on the machinne and everything worked including the usb ports that didn't work before, I uninstalled XP and the wireless and hard wire to the internet are stil working.  One thing I found out about doing is ipconfig /release_all and then ipconfig /renew_all,
I think this would have fix the problem.

I still can't seem to get the usb ports to work, any ideas?

Thank you for your help.

You can do the same when using the "winipcfg utility" (win-ip-cfg = Windows-IP-Config utility). The utility just makes it a little easier...

See if installing the "Intel Chipset drivers" will help ("click here")...
"The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility is the first driver to install. If it is required for your system, it should be installed immediately after installing your operating system and any operating system service packs.

The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility files inform the operating system how to properly configure the chipset for specific functionality, such as AGP, USB, Core PCI, and ISA PnP services. In order to be able to install any chipset-related drivers (e.g. graphics, IDE, etc.), your operating system must first be able to recognize your chipset."

My "Dell Dimension XPS-T / Win98SE" is using the "Intel 440BX Chipset"... like your "Dell OptiPlex GX1p" ("click here" for your specs...).
Here's how the USB section looks in my "Device Manager" ("click here").
These are the device "Driver File Details" listed in its’ properties (“click here” and “here”).
