Would using an ethernet card with my cable modem be an improvement over using USB?
I've been using ISP cable modems for over 4 years now with little to no hitches. Though I recall when my ISP first came to install a cable modem on my PC they commented on my lack of an ethernet card and instead connected the modem via USB. I've been reading here and there that using an ethernet card versus USB is a superior solution. It has had me wondering whether I've really been getting the quality of service from my modem that is being payed for. So, what's the verdict on this? Should I invest in an ethernet card and if so can anyone link me to a good one for my Dimension 4400?

Thanks, though I'm not aware if my 4400 has an ethernet interface. I do know that it didn't come with an ethernet card and has been without one to this day. It just came with a telephone modem.
I believe that my 4400 has USB 1.1, not the faster 2.0. And 3 of my 4 USB ports are currently occupied which makes me wonder if this is bottlenecking my cable modem.

Since you only have 1.1 that does change things. If you don't have built in Ethernet than a PCI Ethernet card would be the way to go. If you have Ethernet, you will have a jack similar to the RJ-11 standard telephone jack except it will be 8 pins instead of 4.
You can also download and run the Belarc Advisor www.belarc.com and it will list what hardware and software you have on your PC.

I use Everest instead to find out about everything in my PC. But yeah, only a 56k modem. Though I THINK there is more than one phone jack-esque jack behind my PC, gotta check it again.
But yeah, PCI Ethernet cards were what I was referring to in the topic title, though I've only heard about them. I can clearly see that my cable modem has an ethernet jack behind it........
