Xps 12 and widi

Ok, last week got an XPS12 with win8 64 bit. It's advertised as being widi capable. However, it is delivered with no widi software. I've tried intel and dell software, and the widi software will not install. I've spent hours on the phone with dell "support". They have been of zero help and have absolutely no experience with widi. They first tried to tell me that intel does not support win8 with widi. I had to point them to the intel site. I'm about to return the XPS12 within my return window if dell cannot solve this as I'm increasingly concerned with the obvious support gaps. Is there anyone running widi on an XPS with win8? Just trying all options before abandoning an otherwise nice machine.

Hi wmhjr1,

Please follow the below mentioned steps to set up Wireless display on XPS 12.

Install the WiDi connection software from this link: http://dell.to/ZeiZmX

Click the above link and click download file and follow the onscreen instructions to install the software.

To set up wireless display:

  1. Turn on your computer. Ensure that wireless is enabled.
  2. Connect the wireless display adapter to the TV.
  3. Turn on the TV and the wireless display adapter.
  4. Select the appropriate video source for your TV, such as HDMI1, HDMI2, or S-Video.
  5. Double-click the Intel Wireless Display icon on the desktop.
The Intel Wireless Display window appears.
  6. Select Scan for available displays.
  7. Select your wireless display adapter from the Detected wireless displays list.
  8. Enter the security code that appears on your TV.

Please reply for any further help.

Unfortunately the above advice is worthless. As described in my op, the widi connections software will not install.   It aborts during installation every time.

I'm going to assume that nobody has ever gotten Widi to function on an xps12 at this point.  I did finally get a return call from Dell support but unfortunately it was in the middle of the business day while I was at work in meetings, and I could not take the call at that time.  They never called back.  I've seen no evidence that there has ever been an xps12 running widi at this time.  No support representative can point to a single successful installation.  It's really too bad, since otherwise I like the machine.  I'm not sure whether this is an engineering problem, a support problem, or both.  Being totally transparent, the link that the DELL-Nikhil D provided is the exact same file that I have attempted at least 15 times already.  Same file, version, etc.  Very very poor support.

wmhjr1,

It used to be you needed Intel My WiFi Technology to use the Intel® Wireless Display

Do you have one of these programs installed?

Installing My Wi-Fi Technology Must use Intel drivers 14.3 or earlier. New program is called Intel® My WiFi Dashboard

Not sure how the Intel My WiFi Dashboard works and little knowledge on Intel My WiFi.

Just got off the phone with Dell again.  Clueless.  They had me install new Wifi drivers, which I did.  This resulted in absolutely no change whatsoever.  The Dell Wireless Display software (from the Dell site and of the correct version) once again aborted the installshield installation in exactly the same spot, and in exactly the same way.  I now have absolutely no confidence whatsoever in any possible form that Dell is capable or interested in supporting a feature/function that they still advertise for this product.  The "new" recommendation from Dell support is to (again) wait for them to "escalate" the issue to their "research group" (this would be the same group that said installing the wifi driver update would resolve the issue) and wait for an answer.  I have 21 days from receipt to initiate a return so since the last effort took 6 calendar days to get a response, it is actually not feasible to try and resolve this any longer  I need to determine if I'm willing to never have WiDi, and perhaps other gaps which I have yet to discover - or to return the product.  Support has provided no confidence whatsoever thus far, so it's probably more likely than not that I'll return the XPS12 and try either Lenovo or Acer.  I am so terribly disappointed with Dell.  This will likely be my last "personal" dealings with Dell.  I have never, ever had such a poor support experience.

OK, so in the network forum I've shown my lack of progress in getting the WiDi software to just even load on a brand new XPS12.  It won't, and unfortunately Dell support has been utterly without any value whatsoever.  It would be comical if it weren't my money having paid for a new device which was not cheap, having asked all the appropriate questions in advance, and then found to be totally broken.

Has anyone had experience with either of the following:

1)  An XPS12 EVER having successfully loaded ANY WiDi software?  And then possibly using it?

2)  ANY XPS ultrabook/notebook EVER having successfully loaded ANY WiDi software?  And then possibly using it?

Dell refused to state that it's ever been done to be honest (Dell Support, that is).  Sales was quite firm that these capabilities were legitimate.  Unfortuantely, nobody can seem to demonstrate that at this point.

I'd appreciate any rapid feedback.  I'm at the brink of having to return this device very soon to stay within my window and am frankly becoming more and more disenchanted with Dell.  Again, Dell has provided not the slightest element of help or progress whatsoever.  All they've done is taken my money for the product, and then had me waste time.  I'm at this point thinking it is a systemic failure.

BTW, I'd also be interested in hearing if others have used WiDi on other non-Dell product, such as the Acer Aspires or Lenovos.  Those are my next two choices.

Thanks!

wmhjr1,

Did you ask over at the Wireless: Intel Communities? They have a moderator from Intel on the boards and since you need an Intel adapter and Windows 7 or higher, they should have a solution.

I had a system that came with Vista 32-bit, switch to Vista 64-bit, then upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit. Only with Windows 7 64-bit was I able to get Intel® My WiFi Technology At that time, it used Intel My Wifi Technologs, not the Intel Dashboard.

Rick, the correct procedure (according to Dell and Intel apparently) is now to insure (beyond hardware requirements are met) that you've got the correct Intel HD4000 drivers, the correct Intel Wifi driver set, and then to install the Intel Connection Manager.  The first two have been done (many times).  The last will simply not install.  Each and every time it starts to install, and then aborts.  Totally and completely consistently.  I've had Dell support engaged right from the start (well, "engaged" is a very strong word for what they've done - they have done nothing).

And No - I am the original poster and the problem has NOT been resolved.  Actually, I not long ago tried to call to initiate a return and have the XPS12 picked up and refunded, but believe it or not Dell's systems are down and they said they could not handle any customer service actions due to their system outages and to try calling back in 2 hours.

Yes, I did check over there.  Unfortunately, they recommend only dealing with Dell, due to potential proprietary changes that Dell may have made to some of the driver builds.

Beyond that, in this case the issue is clearly with being able to simply install the software package - not even configuring or using it.  For kicks I tried both the Intel, and the Dell specific versions (one from the Intel site and one that's indicated by the Dell download page).  Both failed in exactly the same way, in exactly the same spot.

There are others on this site who have also referenced issues with WiDi and the XPS12.  I can still find no evidence of any human being ever having successfully installed, much less configured and used, WiDi.

Hi wmhjr1,

Sorry about the inconvenience. You must connect a wireless display adapter to your TV before setting up wireless display.

Request you to use the below link to download WIDI by selecting the right operating system under Network tab:

http://dell.to/VOAfmn

To connect to existing wireless display connection:

1.     Double-click the Intel Wireless Display icon on the desktop.

The Intel Wireless Display window appears.

2.     Select Connect to Existing Adapter.

If you have further questions do reply to the same post.

OMG.  Before giving the "standard and totally unrelated advice" please do a little research about the product.  Did you even read the OP?  Did you see that the software cannot even be successfully installed?  Kiran-K, your response frankly is insulting in that you clearly either didn't even really read the stated problem, or you don't understand how the process even works.

I guess this answers my first question.  I still have yet to learn of a single, solitary XPS12 that has run WiDi.  At this point, I would prefer that Dell support NOT respond to this thread.  Frankly, I've spend hours with Dell support and various Dell resources.  None of them have been in the least bit knowledgeable about this area, and frankly have not delivered any results whatsoever.  The system is behaving exactly the same right now as it has from the start.  Neither can Dell show me a single instance where they have been successful with this specific model.   I'm more interested in hearing from other customers.  Most important to me would be XPS12 owners, though feedback from any current XPS model owner would be relevant.

I only saw this particular post having made XPS 12 work with WiDi .. http://communities.intel.com/thread/36553?wapkw=dell+xps+12+widi

I'm also interested in getting XPS 12 but not having WiDi is not acceptable.

I should also say, that Dell has completely reproduced the issue where the software will not even install on a factory Dell XPS12 Win8 64 bit build, right out of the box, and also after updating drivers.  At the present time, Dell has no resolution.

I have been spending time with Dell and they have reproduced the issue.  They have confirmed that the XPS12 (among others) has issues with WiDi.
