Can'tprint from some programs

I bought an Inspiron 537 desktop with XP so I could continue using WordPerfect 5.1 DOS, on which I have several genealogy books that are being continually updated and occasionally reprinted. The new computer does not have the old, but workable, big printer connection, relying only on a USB port. But I can't get it to print.

When I use the big old connections with my older computer, a Dell 4550,  it still prints like it has for years. But as soon as I use the USB  ports on the printer and on the 4550--nothing.

What do I have to do to make the printer, a Dell 1710, work with the DOS-based program, and probably some others, from a USB port? It does print from Wordpad.
