Community Site Update - Jan 6

Now blogs and forums are easier to read. Based on user feedback, Dell team increased the font size of forum posts and blog post/comments. We are still getting reports of users getting error messages when trying to post on forums, this is not being ignored, we are going thru multiple patches to eradicate the problem. We are not 100% done, but working to fix the errors as identified. Thank you for your continued patience and feedback.

Craig,

"Sorry, there was a problem with your last request!

Either the site is offline or an unhandled error occurred. We apologize and have logged the error. Please try your request again or if you know who your site administrator is let them know too."

Many of us have been dealing with this nonsense since the inception of this "new and improved" forum. It goes on and on and on and on and ..................................... etc. and Dell keeps telling us that fixing these problems are "at the top of the list".

And no - there is no "secret code" that you have to know in order to do anything on this site. The site is BROKEN (and has been since it launched), it's SLOW, it's not functional, it's more "fluff" than substance - and Dell doesn't seem to care. But it does look pretty !!! BONUS.

Can you imagine ANY other company "going live" with a product such as this???

hrova,

"I certainly don't want anyome thinking the small changes made things all better. They created another problem."

But DELL tells us that this a "new and improved" forum. It must be we (the users) who simply can't appreciate all of the wonderful benefits of this "improved" aberration ??

I have to give credit where it is due, and this new font and size sure is easier on my old eyes. No scrolling to the right needed here.

Thanks, Dell, for the small mercies.

Font is better, but until you can fix the main problem you will have very little member participation in the forum. 17 members online right now is embarrassing. The posting problem is getting worse, not better. Posts--especially the first post--are taking 5 to 6 or more tries. Totally unacceptable. I wonder if the Dell moderators have the same problem. I hope they do. Then it will get fixed faster.

No they apparently do not. Seems the inner sanctum is immune from this problem issue  :emotion-4:

We have some fixes undergoing testing now to issues like wiki tags. Once we exit testing and  push the fixes live, then I will communicate them. These have not been ignored, just part of total list getting worked.

What this brings my mind  is how something like this was missed during the initial testing. If really baffles me as to how this could have gone live if this was or always has been an issue

Top issue remains the problem that users are experiencing with posting. Yes Dell moderators have experienced and continue to experience the same problem. I am not immune either. The situation is unsatisfactory and will be fixed.

Dell IT is working with Telligent (code supplier) on base code, custom code, database, load issues, operating systems, browsers as just some of the permutations and potential root causes. We still have not isolated the all of the causes. Three separate fixes have been installed that have provided some relief to some users, but that is not acceptable. Over the next 2 weeks we are going thru the code again. I wish this was fixed as much as the next person.

It stinks and I am not happy getting error messages or hearing our users/customers experiencing this unsatisfactory experience.

I have been around the dell forums for a long time and recently came back here to check out the forums and I am getting annoyed as I get the same error that there is a problem with my request which only happens when using firefox, but it works with IE.  Also navigating this new forum is a complete nightmare.  I am a member on a lot of forums and this one is the only one that is totally confusing.  Why not keep it simple! Bahh!

You are absolutely right, it stinks and has since the first day this forum went online.   :emotion-45:

Dell-Sean M,

"We have some fixes undergoing testing now to issues like wiki tags".

WOW! That is one BIG relief!!!! This has been one MAJOR issue since the launch of this Community, and I for one, have found this issue INTOLERABLE! The other MINOR issues (can't post on the first attempt, double posts, double carriage return to get normal paragraph spacing, no facility to distinguish read from unread posts, etc., etc., etc.........) can sit on the back burner for now, as long as the WIKI TAGS get fixed. Oh, BTW, what the heck is a WIKI and what the heck is a WIKI TAG - AND WHO CARES ???

Sean, this is the kind of thing to which I've referred in several posts.I know that I've been VERY sarcastic in several of my posts, and I do realize that it's not you Dell Liaisons who are to blame for this mess, but YOU ARE THE ONLY DELL REPS TO WHOM WE CAN TALK OR TO WHOM WE CAN EXPRESS OUR UTTER FRUSTRATION AND DISGUST WITH THIS "NEW AND IMPROVED" PIECE OF (EXPLETIVE!!). We have MAJOR .... MAJOR problems, but yet you guys keep insisting on announcing these insignificant changes as some sort of MAJOR and WONDERFUL improvements! Again (as I have stated before), you are only making yourselves look silly. I really don't think that a "fix" to WIKI TAGS is going to impress very many!

PLEASE, stop announcing these minor "fixes" (larger font sizes (which was negated for a while by the light gray on white issue) and a forthcoming "fix" to WIKI TAGS as major technological breakthroughs! NOBODY CARES!!!!! What we want to see fixed are the important problems. Oh I know that you guys keep spouting the "IT'S AT THE TOP OF THE LIST" rhetoric, but this community is now approaching two and a half months - and these problems have STILL NOT BEEN SOLVED.

I'm now retired, but in my earlier years, I wrote software applications which several companies are still using to help to mange their businesses. Can you imagine what the repercussions would have been if I had sold an application to any of my customers which even approached a bug laden application such as this "Community"??? And yet Dell has gone live with this untested, bug-filled, frustrating-to-use piece of software (which replaced a functional, working, useful, and helpful piece of software). And yet all we hear proclaimed is that "font sizes have been made larger" and "fixes to Wiki tags are on the way". I'm sorry Sean, but as I have stated before. PLEASE QUIT INSULTING OUR INTELLIGENCE!!!

Now let's see if this post goes through on the FIRST (that's a novel idea) attempt.

Arghhh............... Why did I even think that it might. But BONUS - fixes for the WIKI TAGS are on the way !!!

I can only echo what the others above have said. I cannot understand why this abomination was foisted upon us the unwary with no beta testing. What in the world were those responsible thinking when they created this mess? Somehow, I have been able to log-on with no error messages for last several weeks, but since I don't trust the current state of things, I will be saving this message before I hit "Post".  I usually visit the spyware forums, but hope I can find the proper place to post if I have any questions about hardware or other problems with my Dells. I have two at the moment, might start checking out other options the next time around. I do believe, like someone else mentioned, it is Dell's plan to force people into paid support...which will never work...there are too many other sites that offer help on most issues.

For the life of me, I cannot understand the wisdom of taking these help desk types of forums that were almost exclusively user to user, with minimal interaction with the Dell staff, away from us. And then treating long term volunteers here on the forums with utter disrespect and contempt. For whatever reason, this whole change has been a total disaster and a terrible business decision, which I don't think is going to do much good for Dell's bottom line.

dalem9,

I think the "bottom line" is that DELL simply doesn't give a (expletive). I really don't have ANY explanation for this JOKE OF A FORUM! As I have said many times, I frequent and contribute (at least to the best of my abilities) to SEVERAL different forums - NONE of which have the "problems" - (I've been told that these are NOT "FLAWS" - they are simply "PROBLEMS") that this (whatever you want to call it - DELL calls it "NEW AND IMPROVED") that this "WONDERFUL NEW AND IMPROVED COMMUNITY" has.

You are absolutely correct (at least in my opinion) that DELL is not only treating the long term volunteers with contempt - in my opinion DELL is simply thumbing its nose at ALL of its customers. WHAT A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS. But these are DELL'S forums, and I guess that they have the right to make them unfriendly and totally useless!!! LET'S FORCE ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS TO PAY FOR SUPPORT!!! DELL HAS SUCEEDED beyond its wildest expectations.

Now let's see if I can post this on the FIRST attempt (BTW - this has been a problem since the inception of this new aberration, but DELL is insistant on correcting the REALLY MAJOR PROBLEMS - such as font sizes and WIKI TAGS!!!)  WOW - I'm really relieved that those CRITICAL PROBLEMS are being corrected and tested - and I'm certainly beholden to DELL for informing me that those MAJOR problems are being addressed. Now let's try to post this.................

EDITED - WOW - this acutally posted on the first attmept this time (but it included TAGS which I DID NOT specify). Oh well, another "IMPROVEMENT" I guess ???????

Esquire

One approach people use is to set preferences in their browser.  In Firefox 3, it’s under View>Zoom. Select Text Only to limit the view. In IE, it’s under View>Text Size

Let me check into the problem of the site options not working in the dell community site.

Yes, please check why the Site Options text size setting isn't working, but I don't think I should be changing the text size of the browser just for Dell Community, do you?  Text size for rest of Dell sites looks right from here - just the one for Dell Community looks so much bigger for my liking (the old DCF looked just right).  It's fine if the text would warp, but they do NOT, and I have to scroll left-and-right just to finish reading one line!  Can't change screen resolution to make it smaller either - I'm on an Inspiron noteook.
