Lost DVD/ CD DRIVE Recognition
Hi
New to the forum.
While I was trying to renew my nortons I lost the ability to use my cd/dvd drive. I am not sure exactly what happened but when I now go to My Computer no D: drive is shown. I am operating Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 9150. The machine is out of warranty, approximately 3 years old.
I don't recall an uninstall cd/dvd drive message but there may have been one. I have the disk to reinstall but cannot use it as the drive isn't working. Any ideas?
I have downloaded an update for the CD/DVD drive but again because the drive isn't working, it will not update.
Thanks.

First, there are NO third party drivers for CD or DVD drives, ONLY the built in Microsoft drivers. The "update" must be a firmware update for the drive and that will not install unless the drive is detected (if the firmware is really needed).
There can be several problems with CD/DVD drives, one is just that it needs "reinstalled". Others can be registry filters, etc. Uninstall the drive in the Device Manager then restart the PC and when Windows starts it should be detected and reinstalled. If this does not fix it, repost on the Drive (CD/DVD) section of the forum for more assistance.
To access the Device Manager, hold the Windows key down and press the Pause/Break Key. RIGHT click on the drive in the Device Manager then LEFT click on Uninstall, then restart the PC.
