No Power
I had posted this question on the old forum, but didn't quite get the answer I needed before it was changed. This new forum is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to navigate. ( AND S L O W!) Anyway, I have a Dimension 5100. Had a power spike come through the surge protector. Now the computer will not power up. I tried the: 'jumping the green wire to any black wire', and the psu fan came on and the hdd spun up. this happened without my pressing the power button. Which by the way had no power either. (no light on) There is also the green led light "on" the mobo. The mother board does not appear to have ANY bulged or leaking capacitors. I also tried to power up after taking out pieces of hardware at different times. Still no power, beeps. nothing but the green led light. I also tried different power cords and the power down thing with the power cord disconnected. Could it very well be the mobo?! Are there any other self tests I can do? I hate to think that I will lose all the information I have on this not-quite-three-year-old computer. I do not have another computer to which I can test any of the components from the Dimension. Any help would be appreciated.

It WAS the power supply! It was putting out only HALF the power! :emotion-1:

Hello,
It sounds as if the power supply is OK. It sounds as if the motherboard is dead.
It looks like another MB is $110 to $160 from here. :emotion-60:

Could that mean the processor is dead too? Or could it be just the processor? Even though the green LED light on the mobo is ON, the motherboard could still be dead? One more question. (maybe) Is possible to change the motherboard and still save what is on the hard drive? The Dimension 5100 is still all OEM.

Hello again,
Hard to tell. When Dell sends a tech out for this problem, they come with a motherboard, CPU, and power supply.
I don't have physical access to your system with test equipment. You need to decide soon, if the cost to repair is worth it compared to a new system. If I had to 'guess' from what you report, I think the motherboard has died.
No matter what you do in repairs, you can always get your information from the hard drive assuming that you don't damage it during the repair.
