Question about differences in Dell laptop models
What are the major differences between Inspiron, Studio, and XPS laptops? Why is one better/worse/preferred than the other?

The Inspiron laptops are "economy" models, Studios are a bit higher end, and XPS are "gaming" laptops. If you are severely constrained by your budget and don't need a lot of features, you might want to go with the Inspiron line. Otherwise, my suggestion would be to go with one of the others. There are also small business models such as Vostro and Latitude. They're also higher priced and a bit more stripped down in terms of features, but have excellent reputations for serviceability and reliability. My work PC is a Latitude and it's a very solid laptop.
