Hi,

If you have a Dell computer, must you buy RAM only from Dell?

I want to upgrade my RAM to 2GB (from 512MB). I did a RAM scan in the Crucial website and got the following:

Compatible memory upgrades for the Dell Dimension 3100:

Your system configuration: 512MB (2X256MB) NECC Dual Channel DDR2 533MHz SDRAM Memory

CL=4, Unbuffered, NON-ECC, PC will only utilize DDR PC2-4200, Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-4200 speeds (DDR2-533) with a maximum of 1GB per slot (my PC has 2 slots).

Anyway, your specs and Crucial scan only allow you to install modules for 1 Gb x 2 at 533 Mhz in your PC. I do not Know if a 667 Mhz module will work. Sorry.

out of curiosity will i need to reinstall any of my programs after upgradeing the RAM?

No you will not have to update or reinstall anything. Just make sure the RAM is seen by the PC by going to My PC/Properties. it should show the amount of RAM that you installed.
