Service Tag Problem
I bought a Inspirion 545T from Costco on June 28, 2009. It has a service tag on the box. The dell support software on the PC shows the correct service tag. But when I try to run the parts & upgrade option on the Dell Support web site, it does not recognize the service tag, regardless of whether I run the analyzer or directly type in the service tag. I also qualify for the windows upgrade to Windows 7, but it won't let me because it doesn't recognize the tag. I'm lucky that I don't have any problems with the PC, but it's irritating. I contacted support. They reinstalled my Dell support software with no change to the issue. Their answer was to wait a few more weeks and try it again. It seems like others have this problem as well, but I don't see any good resolution to the problem - Any thoughts?

Hi JPD1282, What you can do is to go into your BIOS, and check that the Service Tag there is the same as on the box. To get into your BIOS, press F2 when you see the Dell splash screen at bootup. Any differences in the tags, phone Dell A.S.A.P.

JPD1282,
I purchased my Studio 1737 and received it at the end of January and Drivers & Downloads know my service tag number but...
Dell - Replacement Spare Parts & Upgrades still does not recognize my service tag number with or without running the tool. Dell hasn't updated the information for this.

I checked the BIOS as you advised and the teh service tag there agres with what is on the physical box and what shows up in teh Dell Support software loaded on teh PC. It seems that my PC knows who it is, but Dell doesn't recognize it.

Just a thought - wasn't clear from your original post if you've actually registered the PC with Dell yet, since it was bought retail. May or may not be part of the problem - registration link below for the US:
I'm baffled why support would think reinstalling the Dell Support Center would fix anything. That software has nothing to do with whether Dell's own systems and web site can recognize the tag or not.

I was pretty sure that I had, but just to be sure, I just submitted it again. I also thought that their suggestion was strange, but I let them do it anyway - to no avail. And then their next suggestion - to wait a couple weeks seemed laughable. I'll keep bugging them until they fix it.

After contacting Dell via the order support email form a few times they finally got my service tag working on the support pages. but it still isnt registered for the windows 7 upgrade. 2 friends have also bought dells in the last couple of months and both of them have unreconised service tags too. Dell needs to take notice and sort out why no ones service tags are working. I imagine many people dont notice until when they need technical help in the future and cant get it.

I have the exact same problem as you. The dell drivers...etc section recognises my service tag, but the windows 7 upgrade are does not, even after the elapsed 10 days.
I have emailed dell to start off with, and no reply for two days so i have emailed them again. If they still dont reply i will phone them in a day or so.
Any developments in your case?
EDIT : I baught my dell direct from dell online...so there shouldent be a need to register?

Dell finally recognized my service tag, but I don't think it had anything to do with my calls to them. I got a strange email one day from the US_Tag_Team@dell.com telling me my service tag was transferred. I think what happened was since I bought my dell from Costco, they put the service tags in COSTcos name until costco reports them as sold?
Anyway, mine is working fine now, but you would think they could tell people that - if that's what happened.
