780 MT, rear speaker output jack
I have saved this towers instructions and user manual. The head phones work fine on the front jack and I can see there is also a speaker output jack on the rear, yet when I plug in the speakers which are the normal powered speakers they don't work yet if I plug them into the front head phone jack they work. I tried to update the driver yet it's a windows driver and it said this was the best driver. Have I missed something? I never had an issue with any tower where the speakers would not work. It seems to me since the speaker out and headphone out and everything else on this tower is connected to the main board meaning there are no add on cards then the issue must be a broken connection to the rear speaker out. Seems I have 2 options , see if I can find the break and repair it or use the headphone jack with a Y cord . The only other option would be some sort of sound card. Thought's ?

1. Good troubleshooting
2. Right. Or, the front jack circuit-board (maybe even the plug's physical contacts) is locked into place and permanently over-riding the rear jack.

The OEM Driver is required to Detect the Rear Jack.
The SOUNDMAX CONTROL PANEL comes from that driver.

I went to settings and chose sound then device properties and only see the front headphone /speaker jack , sort of a box with general ,levels, advanced . shows jack information and only the front jack . Now if I unplug the head phone from the front panel then look the jack info is for the rear speaker L&R even though right now I don't have the rear speakers plugged in . With the rear speakers plugged in the rear jack in properties it shows jack info rear speaker yet if I then plug in the headphones in the front jack even with the speakers plugged in the rear jack it becomes the front jack .
Seems like the front jack over rides the rear . Perhaps this is the way it's supposed to work . It does not offer any options other than volume levels and left and right balance.
Also I noted when I was checking to see if I in fact had the speakers plugged into the proper rear jack I pulled it out and plugged into the mic rear jack and have nothing in the front mic jack a settings windows popped up asking if it was a mic or CD player .
I guess this is how this system works . I'm not certain yet it does seem so , I didn't see this info on Dells setup page they provide yet I don't have the one you may get if you bought this PC new.
On my Acer Veriton M261 tower I could leave the front headphones in as well as the rear speakers and both worked it also had a choice of using 3 speaker outs on the rear and chose which ones I wanted to use plugged in or not . On the Acer the only setup sheet was a picture showing where to plug things in it was only when I opened the sound system management I saw all the options. I sort of liked having both plugged in so if a music video or CD I had playing I knew my wife liked I would just power on the speakers .
