9020, hangs with blinking cursor after splash, can't enter BIOS
Hey! I got an Optiplex 9020 where I tried to flash/update BIOS a while back. It seemed to complete successfull but after restart the computer loads the splash screen and after that a black screen with a blinking "cursor" up in the left corner shows. I can't get past this! Tried loading BIOS during splash screen but still the same black screen shows. I have tried to unplug BIOS battery and RAM with no luck. Any ideas or can it be the motherboard that is broken after the BIOS flash?

the first thing not to do is flash BIOS, BIOS has data retention of 100 years, and up to 200 years.(microchip spec is latter) NO REASON GIVEN TO FLASH..
so never do that or risk bricking a PC, have 1000s of examples of folks doing that and for sure not using a UPS as PROTECTIon from bricking or using the wrong flash binaries, or methods.
Can I guess the PC ran perfectly before FLASHING IT?
If yes, then all you can do is ,:::: again , try to get the right binary!
best is to ask for Dells direct help on choosing it, not guess or just grab first binary seen.
some BIOS version take Incremental updates, not huge jumps from most old to new.
IDK only DELL knows this, ask them, first,
always ask first then flash.. (I flash all the time for over 20 years, from the first BIOS Flash memory ever made)
but I know how to do it right and have regression path first. ( I do a BIOS backup first,)
and tell the DELL person, your full service tag number, ok? all data on the service tag first .

DISCONNECT hard drive and restart.
You should be able to F2 into bios after the error.

Thank you for the response. First of all I have learned not to flash BIOS again ;'D
I tried to disconnect hard drive and now it does not go to the black blinking screen but stops at the Dell splash logo. I can press f2 and it says it is loading setup but it stops there. Now it is frozen with Dell splash logo and the loading setup text in upper right corner.
What is the next step to try?

You have bad ram and bad cpu and bad motherboard.
If it does not get to hard drive error its hanging and not posting.
You could try disconnecting EVERYTHING Except power and monitor and see if it errors with no hard drive and no keyboard.
Sounds like a Failed Bios flash.
Removing the CMOS battery may or may not help.

No I meant removing. This doesn't cost anything.
If removing it does not change the behavior its probably a bad bios flash and dead motherboard.
Replacing a battery on a borked motherboard is meaningless.
