adding a rx 6400
Hello.
I have a little optiplex 7050. i7 with 16 gigs of ram also a mvme. So I got myself a low profile rx 6400 so I could turn it into a light gaming machine for the kid.
I assumed I would be able to just drop it in and it should work. When it is in the machine seems to stop early in its boot sequence. Before it start loading up the OS. If I hit f11 f12 I get a little message at the top right of the screen "preparing one time boot.... something or other" and stop there. Please note. I can only see this if the HDMI is plugged into the onboard output. Not the rx 6400. It just give a blank screen on the card.
Now I know the card works because I put it in my rig to test. No problems.
I updated the bios and all the drivers. Sooooo ya, Any thoughts?

@revelationsr specified upgrading PSU in the 7050. Probably has the SFF. 7050 mini tower also uses small PSU since it's not a full-size mini tower.
One way to research if a 240w PSU from a 7050 would work in a 7070 is Google MB images and check MB power connections. It's doubtful since Dell is so proprietary. However, 260w PSU from 7070 tower might work in 7070 SFF. @redxps630 would best be able to answer that one.

Hi @Milk_man ,
It's not specified more specifically what you tried - Secure Boot on or off and etc. If you changed from UEFI to Legacy in Boot Sequence or vice-versa, system won't find boot drive. BIOS has to be in the same mode boot drive was loaded in. If BIOS was set to AHCI in SATA Operation, hopefully that wasn't changed also.
I'm sure you found Legacy Option ROMs. I think that can only be on if Legacy is selected in Boot Sequence.
See, if your boot drive was loaded in Legacy mode and it's still on, then there might be chance changing Legacy Option ROMs on or off will help find the GPU card.
You'll have to put the BIOS settings that affect boot back to where they were.
Secure Boot won't affect whether boot drive is found or not. It's there to guard against any malware and etc. upon boot before OS kicks in.
As for any further advice on the RX 6400, I'll have to let others chime in as I don't have an RX 6400 to test with.

The 360w PSU you linked fit perfectly into my 7070 case and the motherboard and CPU connectors were also the proper type. My system runs great with the new PSU.
For anyone looking for a similar upgrade, I was worried that the stock 7070 200w PSU wouldn't provide enough power with a Radeon RX 6400 video card (50w card). My system is stable with both the new video card and 360w PSU.

Are you able to try any other video cards? What form factor/size is your 7050 and what is being ran for an upgraded PSU?

180w psu is not the issue. I had to disable secure boot.

My card ran so hot that I too returned it and ordered another with a fan instead of passive cooling.

I'm having a similar issue with my OptiPlex 7070 SFF. I have Secure Boot off and Legacy Operation ROMs enabled. Oddly, this issue happens only when connecting my RX 6400 LP (HDMI port) to a DVI port on my monitor (I've tried 2 different cables so I doubt it's an issue with the connection). When I connect it to a HDMI port (on a different monitor) instead, it works flawlessly. Unfortunately, my current monitor does not have a HDMI port, so I'd like to try and make it work before spending money on a new monitor. Thanks in advance for any help.

I must be mad, I bought another identical system and bought another xfx rx6400 swft105 and this one performs and operated identically.
I can confirm that this card is a hot boy, although it does perform very well in a pcie gen 3 system.
I do like these sff optiplex computers. They are so compact and versatile and are emulation power houses.

What a lifesaver this thread is!
I had recently purchased a 3040 SFF with the original 180 PSU.
Everything was tested to be working as expected.
I'd upgraded to an I7 6700, 16gb ram, and a 1TB ssd from the original i3, 4gb, and 250 HDD.
I wanted to install the Sapphire Pulse RX 6400.
All my research had told me it would work. TDP rating for card and CPU with minimal requirements for the rest of the hardware was well within limitations, and I thought that for the relatively small price I was paying for the initial unit and upgrades I would be putting an excellent system for my usages.
You can imagine my disappointment then when after installing the card before doing a fresh windows installation the system posted to the Dell Logo and then just froze.
Clearly the card was working or the I wouldn't have got that far.
What could be the problem?
The usual things I know to work did not provide a solution.
I was starting to think that despite my initial testing maybe the PSU was actually not working as I had thought, and it's output had somehow degraded.
But, after following the above advice everything is fine!
My secure boot was already turned off, but legacy options was not enabled.
The solution for me was to reset the bios to default ( I have the latest installed), and then turn off secure boot and enable legacy options.
I cannot imagine why this should make any difference, but it does!
